They were off in the $10,000 La Salle Handicap at Detroit’s Fair Grounds. Up in the press box, jolly George Krehbiel raised his big binoculars and began telling the television audience what he saw.
“Golden Man goes to the front . . . Marltown second . . . Diamond Dick third. … In the backstretch now and Golden Man has opened a two-length lead.” Suddenly George’s voice rose to a hoarse screech: “They’re going into the far turn and Golden Man is still two lengths ahead!” Listeners heard a strangled sound, then wild shouts: “Come on, Jimmy, ride him, Jimmy, ride him boy!”
George finally addressed the microphone in a shattered voice: “Folks, you’ll have to excuse me. I can’t remember the names of the other horses. That’s Golden Man in front and I happen to own him and there’s only the stretch between me and ten thousand dollars. Ride him, Jimmy! Let him roll!”
As Golden Man finished in front by half a length, George dashed for the winner’s circle to kiss his horse and rider. In due time, another announcer took over the microphone.
