September’s moon was waning, and with it the hope of Europe. Another winter of misery and fear would weaken men’s spirits and bodies. There was fear for Europe, as well as for Russia, in the voice of Wendell Willkie in Moscow, pleading for a second front (see p. 27) and saying: “Next spring may be too late.” But there was also hope in Willkie’s voice, and there was still hope in Hitler’s Europe. From the Arctic to the Mediterranean that hope sprang anew last week as men said, by their deeds: “Because men cannot wait too long, now is the time. . ..”
