PENNSYLVANIA: Susquehannocks

The Pennsylvania Legislature which adjourned last month had had a hammer-&-tongs session: one of the few bills it had unanimously agreed on was a measure for the preservation of the Vanishing American. With a war whoop the Assembly passed a bill leasing a 100-acre tract in Dauphin County to the Susquehannock Indian tribe. Last week paleface Governor Arthur James (honorary Chief O-Dahn-Goht of the Cornplanter tribe) tomahawked the bill with a 500-word veto. His reason: the last Susquehannock Indian was killed in 1763.
