The memory of that December night in 1988, when death rained down from the skies, was too painful. Most people in this small Scottish market town were at home preparing for the holidays when Pan Am 103 exploded. The next day, they quietly took down their trees and tinsel and began mourning the 259 passengers and 11 neighbors who were killed. Time has gradually healed those memories, and two years ago Lockerbie restored its Christmas decorations. But it was last week, with the conviction of Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, that the town seemed finally at peace. “There is a sense of relief that the trial is over and the verdict given,” says local councilor Marjory McQueen. “I think Lockerbie has drawn a line under what happened.” The town is determined not to forget, however. Locals have kept to themselves and away from the campaign by victims’ relatives for a trial, but they have always quietly been there for the bereaved, whether they be visitors or Molly Oliver, the only close relative of a local victim now left in Lockerbie. For the dead, there are discreet memorials all around. In the cemetery, a plain slab of gray Aberdeen granite bears all the victims’ names. In Tundergarth churchyard, 5 km away and opposite the field where the plane’s blue-and-white nose fell, a tiny stone building houses two memorial books. One lists the dead in flowing script, another records their personal histories. Pilgrims who come to this silent, haunting place have also left signed photographs behind, mostly of children, or notes in the visitors’ book. “John Michael Ahern. rip. Always in our hearts. Love, Dad,” was one poignant entry last month for the 26-year-old from New York who loved skiing. Yet another plaque stands in Rosebank Crescent, where part of the plane’s fuselage landed along with more than 60 bodies. Tommy Rae, a decorator who lives here, will never forget the noise of the explosion that blew in his front door. “When we got out, we could see smoke and power lines lying across the road. I went to the car and put the lights on. There were bodies everywhere, some three deep, and an American passport and food from the plane all over our front garden,” he says. Forever in his memory will be “the lass lying on the road as though she were asleep, without a mark on her body except for a wee hole on the side of her forehead.” Bill Parr, 54, a mountain search-and-rescue expert whose dogs turned up some 20 bodies, saw sights that left him in deep depression from delayed shock the following year. Still vivid to him were the two girls he found in a field still strapped into their seats. “They were clasped tightly together, their fingers crossed, and a look of horror on their faces,” he says. Like others in Lockerbie, Parr muses that al-Megrahi must be “a small cog in a big wheel,” but he is equally proud of the Scottish justice system and what he sees as a fair trial. He feels it is time to move on. That’s a sentiment shared by a retired power company worker, Maxwell Kerr, also a Rosebank Crescent resident in 1988\. “We have problems here we need to solve for the future—drugs, keeping the young employed,” he says.
