No – sooner had HURRICANE ANDREW destroyed Homestead Air Force Base, south of Miami, than three Congressmen tried to grab its operations for their own districts. Robin Tallon of South Carolina urged the Air Force to “save money” by abandoning the Florida site and coming on up to Myrtle Beach, whose base is scheduled to close next spring. Meanwhile, Sam Gibbons of Tampa pitched McDill Air Force Base, and J. J. “Jake” Pickle of West Texas talked up the Lone Star State’s Bergstrom Air Force Base.
