China and South Korea announced that they will open formal diplomatic relations this week. Though South Korea remains a close U.S. ally, Seoul is also an increasingly important trading partner for Beijing. The rapprochement is likely to put more pressure on communist North Korea to reach peaceful agreements with Seoul. South Korean President Roh Tae Woo is expected to visit Beijing in October.
