Diplomacy: Going After Big Game

Usually he’s stalking the elusive treaty. But on one of his diplomatic trips this summer, Secretary of State James Baker will be going after the real thing: big game.

The objects of his hunterly interest are in Mongolia, where Baker plans to spend five days in early August. With a visit to Ulan Bator during a swing through Asia, he will acknowledge the political changes in this remote Stalinist outpost, where the Communist Party recently relinquished its monopoly on power and agreed to hold free elections. That done, outdoorsman Baker plans to head for the hills to enjoy a little hunting. Mongolia’s fauna include the spiral-horned Altai Argali wild sheep, the ibex and the black- tailed gazelle, and Baker is known to be especially enthusiastic about this mission.
