And the pizza war is every bit as brutal as those fought by bow or musket or machine gun. That’s why Heinecke, 52, astride a Harley Davidson FX, is leading a squadron of 700 motorcycle delivery boys mounted on Hondas and Yamahas through Bangkok’s Siam Square shopping district to publicize the launch of his new Pizza Company chain. But as he revs the engine on his hog, even this veteran of numerous thick-crust and double-cheese campaigns has his doubts: “What if we bomb?” He could. Analysts around Asia are watching to see if Heinecke, the man who built Pizza Hut into the stomach-share king of the nascent Thai pizza market, can mount an Oedipal (and edible) challenge to his former employer with his new enterprise. They’ve doubted him before. In 1980, when the young American expatriate opened the region’s first Pizza Hut in the Thai beach town of Pattaya, even his friends were sure he would fail. Thais don’t eat cheese. Thais don’t eat bread. And so Thais certainly won’t eat pizza, they reasoned. More than 100 pizza restaurants and a cheese factory later, Heinecke has proved them wrong. (It turns out Thais do eat pizza, only they like to squirt ketchup all over it.) Capitalizing on Asia’s new appetite for Western trends in food, fashion and entertainment, Heinecke morphed a single chain into the Bangkok-based Minor Group, a $300 million conglomerate of hotels, fast-food outlets and clothing franchises. But now the empire is under threat, and the challenge is coming from the business that started it allpizza. After a 21-year relationship, Heinecke and Pizza Hut split in January in a dispute over franchising rights. But Heinecke would not give up any slice of the pizza pie without a fight. On March 17, after a $10 million, 45-day operation, he reopened and rebranded his 116 stores as the Pizza Company, the first Thai-based pizza chain. Tricon International, the multinational conglomerate that owns Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell, has deployed its heavy artillery to quash the rebellion, opening 68 brand-new Pizza Huts throughout Thailand. “It’s a battle between market experience versus brand loyalty,” says Christopher Bruton, managing director of Data Consult, a market research firm based in Bangkok. More than a few analysts think Heinecke could be leading his bakers and bikers into a sausage and anchovie Agincourt. As Pizza Hut’s champion, Heinecke slew all challengers, capturing 95% market share and forcing American chain Domino’s Pizza out of Thailand. Now can Heinecke beat the brand he built? Areeya Boon-Long, associate director at the Bangkok office of AMI Business Consulting, says: “In terms of brand image, awareness and loyalty, Pizza Hut has it all.” Pizza Hut has other strengths, too. Tricon has 33,000 stores in 104 countries. As the largest quick-serve restaurant corporation in the world, it “has enormously deep pockets and that is a tremendous advantage,” says Korn Chatikavanij, managing director of Jardine Fleming Thanakom Securities. Heinecke doesn’t have time for the naysayers. He’s a man who thrives on gut instinct and speed. His hobby, after all, is racing carshe has competed in the Macau Grand Prix and set a speed record driving from Singapore to Bangkokso he was energized when the Pizza Company shot out of the starting blocks. “We went from zero to 70% market share in our first weekend,” he says. His new company even set a record for pizza deliveries in a single day. But a weekend skirmish doesn’t decide a war. Heinecke contends that Tricon’s head office in Dallas has given its Thai unit an unlimited budget to drive him into the ground. “They’re out to kill us,” he says. Hester Chew, managing director of Tricon’s Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia units, is the loyal soldier assigned the job of vanquishing Heinecke. The only painting in Chew’s Sukhumvit Road office is a portrait of the ranking officer of the fast-food business, Colonel Sanders. Behind Chew’s desk, left over from a KFC-Star Wars promotion, looms a 6-ft. tall statue of Darth Vader wielding his laser. Chew, a former lieutenant in the Singapore army, talks about being a “general” in this conflict. Still, he could be busted down to buck private if he loses to a no-name pizza company. “My neck is on the block,” he says, vigorously denying Heinecke’s assertion that he’s working with an open checkbook. Tricon has responsibilities to its shareholders, he insists: “We can’t spend foolishly.” Chew concedes that the company is laying out large sums to lock in prime locations. Although the Pizza Company has won the early going, Chew says that by the end of the year, when Pizza Hut has more than 100 stores, he expects to have 55-60% of the market. The question is how much market is there? According to Chew, Thais eat pizza an average of once every 50 days. “If they come in once a month or every five weeks, then we have 50% growth,” he says . That might be a Pollyannaish projection for Thailand where pizza isn’t a bargain meal. A large Super Supreme, Pizza Hut’s best seller, goes for about $6.25\. A bowl of noodles at a street stall costs about 70\. “I can get 10 Thai meals for the price of one pizza,” says Fon Janyasathien, a school counselor. But that upmarket image is what Heinecke is betting on. He has priced his pizzas higher than his rival’s and is offering 30 varieties with a choice of three different crusts for a total of 90 combinations to Pizza Hut’s 11\. “If Thais see a better pizza, they will pay more for it,” he says. As he leads his mounted pizza warriors through Bangkok’s hot, steamy night, he seems more than a mere pizza man. He is indeed a warrior with a mission: build a better pizza and they will come, he assures his troops.
