In the Diana Hotel last week, pink rose petals rained down as the crowd leapt to its feet and Ultra Nate’s _Free_ thumped, “You’re free to do what you want to do.” With a wave and not a single tear, Tom Ford said farewell to fashion — at least for now — and Milan’s fall 2004 collections got under way.

For months the front-row crowd has been speculating about Ford’s future plans and the impending announcement from the Gucci Group’s parent company Pinault-Printemps-Redoute about who will replace him as creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Some say Ford plans to write a book and direct movies, others swear that he and Gucci CEO Domenico De Sole are shopping for another fashion house and have bought shares in Versace (Versace denies it). The only solid information to be gleaned from the Milan catwalks was that Ford’s sexy, hard-edged muse has been supplanted by a new one: the fashion eccentric. Milan’s new look runs more to dowdy tweed pencil skirts and fur granny jackets than to the slick jersey Oscar dresses and curvy python jackets Ford showed in what was not just a great farewell collection, but one of his best ever.

Ford may be going West to Hollywood, but the rest of the Milanese fashion world is looking East for inspiration as a new kind of bohemian eclecticism seizes the runways. Gone are the raunchy glamazons of Ford’s 10-year reign as fashion’s sexiest image maker. The fall look is eccentric — from Miuccia Prada’s 18th century-inspired optical-photo prints and lush brocade housecoats to Giorgio Armani’s fitted Victorian jackets. Fashion’s new muse covets a completely individual look — one influenced by the popularity of vintage clothing. “When you have all this mass-produced fashion everywhere, people want something more personal — and buying vintage is a way of being unique,” said Veronica Etro, whose collection for her family’s eponymous label was inspired by East European Art Nouveau artists like Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha.

Perhaps more than the sexy curves he gave to fashion, Ford’s real legacy lies in the spending frenzy he started in the mid-’90s with his logo-laden handbags. Designers are now producing some of the most expensive clothes and accessories that have ever hit runways. Fur has become as ubiquitous as panini in Milan, and almost every collection last week was loaded down with pricey details like crystal embroidery, exotic skins (lizard and python) and bling-bling jewelry. You’d never suspect that the prevailing mood among Italian consumers is uncertainty. “The last two years have been difficult for the overall market,” said Fendi ceo Michael Burke, backstage before his company’s show. “That polarizes the market into two extremes, luxury and mass. True luxury houses like Dior and Chanel and Fendi are still doing great in the U.S. and Japan.”

Another durable fashion trend attributable to the departing Ford is the continuing popularity of the haute handbag. “That’s what people buy,” said Burke, gesturing to a table laden with Fendi bags. Indeed, up and down Milan’s iconic Via della Spiga last week, one boutique after another was promoting the very latest handbag look. In the windows at Prada’s spanking new accessories store on the Via Sant’Andrea, there were no fewer than 58 bags on display. “The world has really turned upside down,” said Claudio Castiglioni, the U.S. president of Tod’s, where the latest crocodile tote sells for $12,500\. “Women used to buy $3,000 worth of clothing and a $300 bag. Now it is the reverse. The bag is where they invest.” Thank you, Tom Ford. See you again soon.
