For the November election, McCarran was an odds-on favorite to defeat Republican George Marshall, a Las Vegas lawyer. ¶In Utah, by a 4-to-1 majority, Republicans picked Wallace F. Bennett, a small business (paint & glass) man who once headed the National Association of Manufacturers, to run against the Democrats’ scholarly Senator Elbert D. Thomas. Fair Dealer Thomas, who had never paid much attention to his local political fences, seemed to be in real trouble this time, facing his stiffest fight in years.
