For its 30th anniversary, the Cherwell, an Oxford literary magazine, asked George Bernard Shaw to write some little birthday message. Last week, along with contributions from Sir Edward Marsh, Christopher Fry, C.E.M. Joad, Beverly Nichols and other literary lights, the Cherwell printed the reply from non-Oxonian Shaw:* “What do you think the thirtieth Anniversary of the Cherwell means to me? Why, I haven’t even bothered to celebrate my ninetieth!”
* Shaw went to Dublin’s Wesleyan Connexional School and the Central Model Boys’ School, never to a university.
