Religion: Some Question

Meeting in Paris last week to draft a Declaration on Human Rights, members of the U.N. Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee decided that it would be best to leave God out of Article I. After objections from the U.S.S.R. (as well as from Britain, China and India), Brazil withdrew its proposal to include the statement that “all human beings were created in the image and likeness of God.” This proposition, said the Russian delegate, “is much disputed” in the Soviet Union.
