EIRE: The Path of Progress

To the U.S. Government’s request that it shut its doors against war criminals, the Government of Eire replied last week: “. . . The Irish Government can give no assurance which would preclude them from exercising that right [of asylum] should justice, charity or honor or the interest of the nation so require.”

Lord Vansittart, Britain’s No. 1 advocate of Scbrecklichkeit (frightfulness) for Germans, exploded. “The Eire statement,” he cried, “is a piece of impertinence toward mankind. . . . The war criminals will be brought to justice if all the neutrality laws in existence have to be recast. … It is imperative that we do not allow these out-of-date theories to interfere with the safety of civilization.”
