All Washington has known for months that General George C. Marshall is actively annoyed and embarrassed by recurrent Marshall-for-President talk. Last week the Chief of Staff was credited with a quotation rivaling General William Tecumseh Sherman’s famous “I will not accept if nominated, and will not serve if elected.” The New York Herald Tribune’s Bert Andrews reported that “friends” of General Marshall say that if he were “in a position to talk about the topic” he would declare: “I’ll be in my grave before I’ll be in politics.”
