In 1961–before her Oscar nomination for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, before she appeared in Tom Jones, A Man for All Seasons, The Killing of Sister George and Robert Altman’s Images and before she thrice played Superman’s mom–TIME noted that Susannah York (then just 22) was already “an expert actress.” York died Jan. 15 at 72.
