There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.” Van Der Beek [announced in November 2024](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7db1jSFyTJk&t=4s) that he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, telling _People_ magazine at the time that he had been “privately dealing” and was “taking steps” to resolve it with family. In [a 2013 interview with Larry King](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjjb-P5W4EU), Van Der Beek recalled how he auditioned for the role and how he almost didn’t get cast because of misgivings from executives, but “Kevin Williamson, who created the show, had to put his foot down and say, ‘Listen, I created this guy, I know this guy.
