The Winter Olympics returned to Italy this year for the first time in two decades. And they’re set to bring new triumphs and losses to more familiar ground in the years ahead, from France to the United States.

In the more than a century since they were [first held](https://www.olympics.com/ioc/faq/history-and-origin-of-the-games/when-were-the-first-olympic-winter-games-held) in Chamonix, France, in 1924, the Winter Games have been hosted by [21 cities](https://stillmed.olympics.com/media/Documents/Olympic-Games/Factsheets/The-Olympic-Winter-Games.pdf) across 13 different countries. Two Italian cities are playing host to the 2026 Winter Games: Milan, which has never had the honor before, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, which has become just the fourth city to host the Winter Olympics more than once.

Some of the cities that will be hosting future Winter Games have already been announced as well, including another that will join the exclusive list of cities to host the Winter Olympics twice. Here’s where the Games are heading next.

## **2030**

The 2030 Winter Olympics are set to take place in the French Alps from Feb. 1-17, marking the fourth time France has hosted the Winter Games. France has also hosted three Summer Games, all in Paris.

“The vision of the Games is to unite the north and south French Alps and make them a hub for winter sport,” the official website for the 2030 Games [reads](https://www.olympics.com/ioc/olympic-games/french-alps-2030-vision). That year’s Games will take place in part of the largest interconnected ski area on the planet, running over about 600 km. The Olympic events will be held in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançon, and Nice.

## **2034**

Utah will host the 2034 Winter Olympics from Feb. 10-26\. The state capital, Salt Lake City, will be “at the heart” of the Games, after previously serving as the host in 2002, but competitions will also be held in other communities nearby, according to the official [website](https://www.olympics.com/ioc/news/utah-2034-marks-3-000-days-to-go-with-new-name-and-statewide-engagement-push). The upcoming Games will be held entirely in pre-existing or temporary venues, including some used in 2002, according to the [website](https://www.olympics.com/ioc/olympic-games/salt-lake-city-utah-2034-sport).

2034 will mark the fifth time that the U.S. has been the host country for the Winter Games. The country has also hosted four Summer Olympics, and will add a fifth in 2028 when the Games return to Los Angeles.

## **2038 and 2042**

Host cities haven’t yet been selected for the 2038 and 2042 Games, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is [in talks](https://www.olympics.com/ioc/faq/electing-olympic-hosts/when-will-the-next-hosts-for-the-olympic-summer-games-and-olympic-winter-games-be-elected) with Switzerland to possibly host the 2038 Games.
