### FAQ

#### Is a PMP certification worth it?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is widely considered a valuable certification for project managers seeking to advance their careers. According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. The organization also produces research and thought leadership on emerging trends, helping professionals stay current with skills in areas like AI, agile practices, and strategic business management. These resources are designed to help professionals at all levels enhance their skills and advance their careers.

#### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The PMP (Project Management Professional)® and CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)® are both certifications offered by PMI, but they target professionals at different career stages. The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. Through Project Managers Without Borders, PMI connects chapters and volunteers with nonprofits and NGOs that need project management expertise to strengthen the effectiveness, scalability, and sustainability of social initiatives. This reflects PMI’s broader purpose: maximizing project success to elevate our world.

[Kim Kardashian](https://time.com/collection/time100-companies-2023/6284875/kim-kardashian-time-cover-skims/) has paraded her talents down many avenues for expression, including unscripted television, advertising, social media, photographic image, and fashion. Now she is taking on a new one, the business lecture. Starting Dec. 4, she will host her first MasterClass, which is about how she turned her unlikely fame into a fortune, by following 10 simple “Kimmandments.” Just ahead of the class—and in between dental and medical appointments for her children—she talked to TIME about how to be loud, how to tell when a scandal will blow over, and how she talked her sisters into the show that started it all.

_This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity._

**What is the appeal of doing a MasterClass for you?**

I think I got sparked when I went to do a Harvard [Skims](https://time.com/collection/time100-companies-2022/6159502/skims/) marketing class and noticed that so many people were shocked at how involved I was in the business. On the reality show, I think our viewer wasn't that interested in watching my day-to-day meetings and fittings and fabrics and, you know, all of the things that I do for Skims or \[KKW\] Beauty like makeup testing and wear testing. That stuff takes a long time.

**You're very successful. You're very well off. Why do you feel the need for people to know about your business?**

I think they're interested. I've always thought I was like a brand for my fans, and they're at a point now where they want that advice, and I haven't had the right platform to give it to them. I want to be able to give them the tools that I have learned along the way.

**Does your advice apply to people who are not famous?**

It applies to everyone, to all people that want to start a brand and want help on how they can market, what they have to sell, and if I can do anything to help them.

**One of your Kimmandments is “Don't follow the feed, be the feed.” You advise people to become unavoidable. But how can someone in your elevated position speak to people who have not had the publicity that you've had?**

I think there have been so many smaller brands or viral moments. The most random viral dances will happen on TikTok and will become such a big thing. I mean, think about 6-7\. It was two kids…

**Yeah, but we don't know those kids’ names, and they have not made any money off it. Do you see what I'm asking—how it's different for you?**

I hope to give people tips on how they could market an idea, how to have the best product and how to make noise, to be loud, to be authentic, to do it your way, and not use the generic way of marketing, like just buying ads. You have to be loud and be yourself so that you can draw an audience. You have to be a part of the algorithm and be a part of the feed. It's a little bit more work and in different avenues that you might not be familiar with, but you have to get familiar. A huge part is sharing your life and getting yourself out there to promote your brand.

**Have you ever taken a MasterClass?**

I watched my mom's. She was, for some reason, so nervous to do it, which was so cute, because she's so great.

**Is there some skill that you’d like to learn?**

I would like to hone my acting craft. There's things that I haven't been able to do–I'd love to play the piano. Is there a MasterClass from a pianist on how to learn something new like that?

**You’re already a cultural and beauty icon. How important is it to you to be taken seriously as an entrepreneur?**

It's extremely important. It's really where I started. I was working in my dad's office, having my little eBay business, closet-organizing business and making hair accessories and selling them at Fred Segal. There's so much I did before I started a TV show that was entrepreneurial. I mean, the whole reason we wanted to start our show was to bring attention to our Dash store–at least that's how I was able to get my sisters to sign on. I let them know that, you know, it'll bring such great promotion to our store. And they were in once they heard that.

**Are you taking responsibility for the beginning of** **_Keeping Up With the Kardashians_** **?**

I think I was the one that convinced everyone for sure. I really wanted it. I really wanted to do a reality show since the day MTV’s _The Real World_ came out and I watched it with my best friend. I looked at her and I told her, “That's what I'm going to do.” And she said, “I’ll be your manager.” I think we were 11\. I said, “When we're 18, we have to make a tape and send it into _The Real World_.” Her dad's in the music-business management world. So she said, “Oh, we can get my dad to send it to someone at MTV.” We made a whole plan. And so when I signed on to do _Keeping Up With the Kardashians_, the producers were the same producers, Bunim/Murray \[with Ryan Seacrest\], that did _The Real World_.

**You call your tips Kimmandments. It’s been a good name for you. I wonder if you're more driven than Kourtney or Khloe, because their names are harder to turn into puns?**

I used to always go by Kimberly, until we signed on to do the reality show. And when I looked at my chyron, _Kimberly Kardashian_, I said, “I think that's so long for people to say.” And like, “Let's just shorten it to Kim.” And it's so weird, because all my friends from high school and growing up, and my dad, everyone calls me Kimberly.

**That Kimmandment about being unavoidable—how much is it that you've been deliberately unavoidable, and how much have you made the most of things that have happened to you?**

It's definitely been both. I don't see there being another option but making the best of something that's been done to you or happened to you or around you. What's the point? I've never seen it with any other lens.

**Do some of the ways that you have been unavoidable seem like things that only you could get away with? In the class you talk about the merkin and the nipple bra. Other creators who try to launch what is essentially a pubic wig or a bra with nipples might not have such success...**

Well, we’re a lingerie company, so it makes sense. But there's so many other people that have come up with things that have been really innovative; Apple can launch an iPhone—they were a small company at one point. Streaming services did stuff at the beginning that was really innovative. There are disruptive brands and people out there. Look at [Haley Bieber's](https://time.com/collection/time100-next-2023/6308467/hailey-bieber/) beauty brand Rhode–she came out with just one product \[_ed. note: there were three, but the peptide glazing fluid went viral_\]. Anyone can have that unavoidable product or song or TV show if it is really super authentic and tells a great story.

**You had to rename your brand Skims after all the labels were printed, because the Japanese government and others objected to the original name, Kimono. People were also upset that you had shapewear for pregnant women, but you did not change it. How can you tell when you have to pivot like you did with Kimono and when you can weather a scandal?**

I think you can really feel the noise. You can hear when it is so loud. For Kimono, I thought, I have such respect for that culture, and I wouldn't want someone to think that I was misusing or appropriating it, so let's change it. With pregnancy shapewear, I wore it, and all my friends wore it during our pregnancies. I knew that we had to better educate people. You have to know when to reeducate and reintroduce facts and storytelling to make it make sense. With something that could be scandalous or salacious or inappropriate, you cannot wait a long time. I think the key is a quick response, accountability, and fixing. Even if it'll take longer to fix, quick accountability is the most important thing.

**One of the ways that you distinguish yourself is that you talk about your failures openly. You were pretty open** [**on Instagram**](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRIO52kEnvu/?igsh=MTBycXhhZm0yOTd6aA%3D%3D) **about your struggle to pass the California Bar.**

I took a minute to process that, and instantly, when I got my results, I didn't feel good about it. I was really uncomfortable and not confident for a while. You get the results on a Friday, and I knew Sunday morning they were going to be live on the internet. So I wanted to mention it first and let people know that it didn't go my way. So, instantly I was like, OK, let's do this, I know what I've got to do. This really sucks because I put so much time into it, but I know what I can do better. I'm pretty good at taking a failure and turning it into something and I just don't have the time to dwell. You can feel sorry for yourself for a second, but I need to take that time and put it into studying more.

**Kimmandment No. 8 is “Know your worth and add tax.” You talk during that section about how you lacked confidence, up until you weren't depending on a partner or a sister. Could you explain to people what someone who seems as bold as you means by that?**

I lacked the knowledge that I could do something creatively on my own. I always had a sister or someone by my side, and it was always this comfort that, like, OK, if it doesn't go our way, it's all of our fault. You always had a buddy system, having a lot of sisters, being in the same business. I started to get more confident as I started to do projects on my own. And that comes with maybe something not being successful and taking a loss. I tell a story in the MasterClass where my sisters and I did a beauty deal and we got like a 6% royalty, split three ways, and then from each 2%, we gave 25% away for management and agency fees. That deal lacked the confidence of knowing what you bring to the table. So as you grow and figure that out, you gain confidence to say, like, “Oh, this is what I'm worth, and this is the deal. Take it or leave it.”

**Kimmandment No. 9 – “Empires are built before dawn”** **_–_** **is about time management. Where is the weirdest place that you ever took a business call?**

I mean, was it in the dentist's office today? I've hidden in closets with all my kids running around. I remember hiding in the cubby under the stairs and trying to make a call so no one would find me.
