He won Tony Awards for his plays _Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead_ (1968), _Travesties_ (1976), _The Real Thing_ (1984), _The Coast of Utopia_ (2007), and Leopoldstadt (2023). He won an Oscar for co-writing the screenplay for _Shakespeare in Love_ and was credited for his work on the scripts for Hollywood blockbusters like _Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade_.
