**_Warning: Spoilers ahead for Playing Gracie Darling_**

[Netflix’s](https://time.com/7327852/new-on-netflix-november-2025/) _Playing Gracie Darling_, a [mystery drama](https://time.com/collection/best-mystery-thriller-books/) series led by Kristina Bogic and Morgana O'Reilly, begins as a story about childhood fears but quickly evolves into something deeper. The series, out Dec. 1, follows psychologist Joni Grey (O'Reilly), whose childhood best friend Gracie Darling (Bogic) disappeared under bizarre circumstances connected to a group séance the two girls and their friends performed in the woods years earlier. Over time, the disappearance became a sort of local myth, inspiring the town’s kids to create a game named after Gracie—one which treats the teenager almost like a ghost story. Now, another member of the prominent Darling family has gone missing, and Joni finds herself drawn back to her hometown.

When she returns, Joni discovers that the town has been living in the shadow of that unsolved case for decades. The discovery of the second missing Darling child reignites old fears, dredges up memories she spent years burying, and forces her to confront the one place she hoped never to revisit—the shack in the woods where everything once fell apart. It’s also in this return home that Joni begins experiencing unsettling visions of Gracie, blurring the line between memory, [trauma](https://time.com/6998595/bessel-van-der-kolk-trauma-profile/), and the possibility that she’s sensing something the others can’t. The show uses this return home to unravel layers of trauma, superstition, and lies that shaped the entire Darling family.

Here’s how the show eventually wraps up the mysteries laid out in its premiere, over the course of six episodes.

## **Why the teenagers were in the shack**

![Playing Gracie Darling - Season 1](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt7b55b31ccebac062/6998cc0f1500fba0d0aa6d44/PLAYINGGRACIEDARLINGAUSTRALIA_S01_Eps105_15144347.jpg?branch=production&width=3840&quality=75&auto=webp)

The teens go to the shack and summon spirits Courtesy of Netflix

The shack functions as the emotional and narrative centerpiece of the series, and understanding why the teenagers gathered there is crucial to understanding the ending. Years before Gracie vanished, she had become obsessed with contacting spirits—specifically a presence she believed communicated with her through a Ouija board. This presence, called “Levi,” was unknown to the others at first, but it fascinated Gracie enough that she led her friends deep into the woods to the old shack. The eerie, abandoned building was the perfect setting for teenagers looking for something forbidden and exciting.

The séances eventually became routine for the group, but by 1997, the atmosphere had shifted. Gracie’s interest in Levi was no longer harmless curiosity; it was consuming her. She believed she was getting closer to uncovering a family secret no one else understood. What her friends didn’t know was that Levi had once been a real person—a member of the Darling family whose existence had been carefully erased from public memory. The shack was the site of Levi’s death, which meant that every time the teens gathered there, they were unknowingly stepping into a place tied to unresolved trauma and violence. It was this final séance, performed inside the shack, that set the tragic chain of events in motion and led to Gracie’s disappearance.

## **How Gracie Darling died**

For most of the series, Gracie’s fate is framed as either supernatural or the result of an attack in the woods. Joni and her friends believed for years that Gracie had been “taken” during the séance, and their memories were so fragmented and frightening that they assumed something paranormal must have happened. As adults, both Joni and her friend Jay, another member of their teen group, carry deep guilt because each believes they may have hurt Gracie that night. Joni remembers fighting with Gracie shortly before the séance, and Jay recalls Gracie lunging at him while seemingly possessed, which led him to push her away, accidentally causing her to strike the back of her head on something solid.

However, none of these events directly killed Gracie. The truth comes together only when Joni’s daughter Mina uncovers information about Levi Darling—revealing that the family had been hiding far more than anyone realized. After Jay fled the shack, believing he had injured Gracie, she regained consciousness and walked home in a state of confusion. There, she confronted her grandfather James about Levi. She had stumbled too close to a secret the family had spent decades suppressing. James, a controlling and violent figure, punished her brutally. During the assault—a twisted attempt to force her into silence—he drowned her. This was the real cause of her death: not a spirit or a stranger, but her own grandfather.

## **What happened to Frankie Darling**

![Playing Gracie Darling - Season 1](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt87bac68608b505bd/6998cc0ff1b082bcf26f1e83/PLAYINGGRACIEDARLINGAUSTRALIA_S01_Eps102_15097191.jpg?branch=production&width=3840&quality=75&auto=webp)

Episode 2 of Playing Gracie Darling Courtesy of Netflix

The disappearance of Gracie’s niece Frankie initially mirrors Gracie’s case: the séance—which Frankie herself has taken up as a way to escape her painful home life—the woods, and the sudden vanishing. Everyone assumes history is repeating itself. The town panics, and the folklore surrounding Gracie flares up again. But the truth behind Frankie’s disappearance is entirely different. Instead of being taken, it turns out she ran away intentionally. Frankie had discovered disturbing information about her family—not just about Levi and Gracie, but about her own parentage. She learned that her mother Ruth and her uncle Peter had been involved in an incestuous relationship long before she was born, and that Peter, not Ruth’s husband, was her biological father.

Unable to live with the weight of these revelations, Frankie used the séance as a planned distraction. She left clues that mimicked Gracie’s disappearance to ensure no one would look for her in the right places. She found temporary refuge with Billy, a local outcast who had been quietly moving evidence to protect her. Frankie’s disappearance, like Gracie’s, had no supernatural origin. Both were born from the same cycle of secrecy that destroyed their family decades earlier.

## **Why Ruth and Peter covered for James**

Once Gracie’s true cause of death surfaces, the question becomes: why did no one in the Darling house ever report what James had done? The answer lies in the complex dynamic between the family members. James ruled the household with intimidation, using violent “discipline” to control his children and grandchildren. The cousins Ruth and Peter grew up accustomed to compliance and fear, and they were also hiding their own wrongdoing. Turning James in would expose their personal secrets—including their forbidden relationship—and destroy the family’s public image, something James insisted must remain untarnished.

After Gracie’s death, James forced Peter to help him dispose of the body by burning it in the woods. The two adults kept the secret for decades, convincing themselves that silence was the only way to survive. When the truth finally comes out, Gracie’s mother Moira realizes that the legal system will likely deem James too mentally deteriorated to stand trial. So she takes justice into her own hands. In one of the series’ darkest and quietest moments, she strangles her own father as he sleeps, ending the cycle of control he maintained for generations.

## **Why Ivy Appeared to Joni**

After the cases are solved and Joni returns to her regular life, the show inserts one last twist. Joni sees Ivy—a troubled patient from her psychiatric ward—standing in her backyard. Ivy had a history of self-harm, and the last time Joni saw her, she had narrowly prevented a serious suicide attempt. Joni assumes Ivy escaped the facility, but the girl disappears the moment she approaches her. Then Joni receives a phone call informing her that Ivy has died.

This moment introduces a new possibility: Joni may genuinely have the ability to see the dead. Unlike her visions of Gracie, which could be attributed to trauma, Joni had no knowledge of Ivy’s death at the time of the sighting. The show stops short of confirming whether Joni is psychic, but the implication is strong. Her intuition, her connection to the shack, and the spiritual disturbances she felt in town suggest that she is more sensitive to the supernatural than she ever realized.

## **What the shack reveals about Levi Darling**

![Playing Gracie Darling - Season 1](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt0a95990197fb6b02/6998cc0fe2d64bdf9cc5fe68/PLAYINGGRACIEDARLINGAUSTRALIA_S01_Eps101.jpg?branch=production&width=3840&quality=75&auto=webp)

Secrets abound, in and out of the shack Courtesy of Netflix

The final scenes hint that the shack’s reputation wasn’t just fueled by teenage imagination. Levi Darling was James’ younger brother, and he died in a fire at the shack years before Gracie was born. The family suppressed all records of him, perhaps because the circumstances of his death implicated James, perhaps out of a broader sense of shame surrounding their dark family secrets. Whether Levi’s spirit actively influenced the séance or simply lingered around a place tied to unresolved trauma, the show suggests that something supernatural truly does reside there.

While Levi did not cause Gracie’s death, his presence seems tied to the building. The shack operates almost like a container for generations of secrets—Levi’s, Gracie’s, and the fear that spread through the town after both disappearances. By the end, the series proposes a dual truth: the horrors Gracie suffered were entirely human, but the strange energy surrounding the shack and the apparitions Joni sees cannot be explained away so easily.
