This week is expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving holiday travel period in 15 years, with more than 360,000 flights set to travel through the U.S., according to the [Federal Aviation Administration](https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-expects-busiest-thanksgiving-travel-period-15-years) (FAA). And while the surge of flight delays and cancellations driven by the government shutdown [appears to have ended](https://time.com/7334697/flight-delays-cancellations-government-shutdown-faa/), inclement weather has been sweeping through much of the country and is expected to continue into the long weekend, which could disrupt air travel. Thousands of flights have already been [disrupted](https://www.flightaware.com/live/cancelled/minus2days) so far this week, with more storms and busy travel days ahead. Travelers are also flocking to the country’s railroads and highways, where they may be faced with crowds or potential disruptions. Amtrak [predicted](https://media.amtrak.com/2025/10/amtrak-encourages-booking-early-as-thanksgiving-travel-demand-surges/) that this year will be a record-breaking Thanksgiving travel season, and the American Automobile Association [estimated](https://newsroom.aaa.com/2025/11/aaa-thanksgiving-travel-forecast-2025/) that nearly 82 million people will travel at least 50 miles from their homes this week. Here’s what you should know to prepare yourself if you’re traveling this week. ## **How busy are airports going to be?** The Department of Transportation [estimated](https://x.com/USDOT/status/1993038767301755058) that roughly 19.3 million are going to be flying this week, including 2.4 million people on Thanksgiving Day. More than 50,000 flights are scheduled for Wednesday, and more than 25,000 are scheduled for Thanksgiving Day. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will also be busy, with more than 41,000 flights scheduled for each of those days. But the agency assured the public that it’s prepared for the busy travel period. “Thanks to the dedication of our air traffic controllers and every FAA employee, we are ready for the holiday rush and take pride in helping travelers reach their friends and families during this important time of year,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a press release. “I am deeply grateful to our entire FAA team. Even through a period of record-high traffic, their unwavering commitment keeps the system running safely.” This holiday season comes on the heels of the [longest government shutdown in U.S. history](https://time.com/7331167/longest-government-shutdown-history/). Before the shutdown [ended](https://time.com/7333543/government-shutdown-over/) earlier this month, the staffing shortages it contributed to at airports led to [disruptions in air travel across the country](https://time.com/7323820/air-travel-warning-flights-delayed-government-shutdown/). Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy [announced](https://time.com/7331645/flight-cuts-delays-airports-united-states-government-shutdown/) sweeping cuts to flights at 40 major airports during the shutdown due to air traffic control safety concerns, but on Nov. 16 announced that he was [lifting all restrictions](https://time.com/7334697/flight-delays-cancellations-government-shutdown-faa/) and that the air traffic system would resume normal operations.
