But that looks like it’s about to change—soon. Elon Musk, already the world’s richest man, is on track to potentially become the first trillionaire within the next decade after Tesla shareholders approved a [pay package](https://time.com/7314930/elon-musk-trillionaire-prediction-tesla-pay-plan/) that could propel the CEO’s wealth into the 13-digits if he meets a set of lofty corporate quotas. And he may not be the only one. Five people are expected to reach trillionaire status in the next ten years, according to [analysis](https://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/research-publications/takers-not-makers/) from Oxfam, a global organization that seeks to combat poverty and injustice. In the last year alone, the ten richest billionaires grew $698 billion [richer](https://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/research-publications/unequal-the-rise-of-a-new-american-oligarchy-and-the-agenda-we-need/), while more than a third of the world’s largest 50 corporations—together worth $13.3 trillion—are now either run by a [billionaire](https://www.oxfam.org/en/research/multilaterialism-era-global-oligarchy) or have a billionaire as a principal shareholder. “The emergence of trillionaires should obviously be cause for alarm,” Nabil Ahmed, a senior director of economic justice at Oxfam, tells TIME. [Musk](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2025/7273786/elon-musk/) and other extremely wealthy individuals—including Meta CEO [Mark Zuckerberg](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2025/7273810/mark-zuckerberg/) and Oracle co-founder [Larry Ellison](https://time.com/6964931/larry-ellison/), whose net worth briefly [overtook](https://time.com/7316518/larry-ellison-richest-musk/) Musk’s earlier this year—have already frequently ranked among TIME’s most influential people for their roles in shaping our world. With a reported net worth of over $480 billion and ownership stakes in companies like SpaceX, X, and Neuralink, Musk already holds enormous power in the tech, space, artificial intelligence, and communication industries. He has sought to leverage that wealth and influence in the political sphere, as well, throwing his support behind President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars and leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as it worked to slash the federal budget and workforce in the early days of the Administration. **Read more:** [_Elon Musk Could Become the World’s First Trillionaire in the Next Decade. Here’s How_](https://time.com/7314930/elon-musk-trillionaire-prediction-tesla-pay-plan/) If he does reach trillionaire status, experts warn that his power could grow further and threaten the ability of the world’s governments and laws to check him. “There's a reason that we must talk about oligarchy, because great wealth translates into undemocratic power,” Ahmed says. ## **Money in politics** Many in the U.S. are already concerned about the growing role of wealth in politics, and the influence it could have on lawmakers. A 2023 Pew [study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/10/23/7-facts-about-americans-views-of-money-in-politics/) found that over 70% of Americans believed there should be spending limits for political campaigns, while 85% believed that “the cost of political campaigns makes it hard for good people to run for office” and 80% said those who donate to campaigns have too much influence over members of Congress. There used to be more restrictions on the amount of money that individuals and organizations could pour into elections. The Supreme Court’s controversial 2010 [decision](https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/citizens-united-explained) in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission eliminated campaign finance [safeguards](https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/fifteen-years-later-citizens-united-defined-2024-election) that limited companies’ “independent” political spending that didn’t go directly to candidates or parties, opening the door to super PACs and a flood of corporate contributions. The late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg called it the [worst ruling of her time](https://newrepublic.com/article/119578/ruth-bader-ginsburg-interview-retirement-feminists-jazzercise), and several states have gone on record supporting a constitutional amendment to [overturn](https://www.citizen.org/article/by-the-numbers/) it. But 15 years later, the decision remains in place, and the wealth of the richest companies and individuals has only grown. Roughly 44%, or $481 million, of all the money raised to support Trump’s 2024 campaign came from [ten individual donors](https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/fifteen-years-later-citizens-united-defined-2024-election); Musk alone contributed more than [$250 million](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/05/us/politics/elon-musk-trump-rbg-election.html) to that sum. **Read more:** [_How Elon Musk Became a Kingmaker_](https://time.com/7177802/elon-musk-donald-trump-2024-election/) “We're living in a democracy which is absolutely being undermined by the fact that some people can throw tens and tens of millions around an election, and another person can just show up with their vote,” Ahmed tells TIME. Trillionaires are “not an inevitability” but a “product of decades of the wrong policy choices,” he says, arguing that as net worths continue to rise among the world’s elite it becomes more and more important to implement policies that check their influence. “It's absolutely true that in a politics in which corporate power and the ultra rich do not face guardrails, they will maximize their interests to increase their wealth,” he says, which in turn further restricts the efficacy of the law. Ahmed compared the current state of wealth inequality to that in the Gilded Age, an era in U.S. history defined by the vast economic disparities that widened as families like the Vanderbilts, Carnegies and Rockefellers amassed great fortunes. The richest 0.0001% control a greater share of wealth now [than they did then](https://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/research-publications/unequal-the-rise-of-a-new-american-oligarchy-and-the-agenda-we-need/), Ahmed notes. In addition to the role of money itself in politics, Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, also points to Musk’s influence in the social media sphere as a mechanism through which he can impact elections. “He has tremendous influence in elections because of his ability to drop tens or hundreds of millions of dollars into any particular campaign. He also has millions of followers on X that gives him the ability to shake the public dialogue and to reward his friends and punish his enemies,” West says. ## **Corporate power** As with money in politics, Americans are already widely concerned about the power wielded by the tech companies owned by some of the world’s wealthiest people. Nearly 70% [surveyed](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/07/20/56-of-americans-support-more-regulation-of-major-technology-companies/) by Pew in 2021 believed major tech firms had too much influence in the economy, and 56% said such companies should be more strictly regulated. Musk’s particular dominance across multiple industries is also a point of concern for experts in terms of his global power**.** “He's unusual in that he's influential in many different ways, because his businesses operate in so many different fields,” West points out to TIME. He suggests that Starlink, Musk’s internet and satellite network, and its parent company SpaceX, his aerospace company, represent ways in which the billionaire tech CEO’s reach across industries could give him leverage against governments. “People want to use his technology, especially Starlink, that's been adopted by many countries of the world. Leaders want their satellites to be launched on SpaceX,” West says. “So he is influential in many different areas.” [Starlink](https://starlink.com/technology) operates the biggest satellite constellation network in the world, with 6,750 satellites currently in orbit providing internet to millions of people around the globe. That network has helped improve connectivity in remote areas or those suffering from conflict or disasters. But it is also subject to Musk’s control. In the beginning of Russia’s war in Ukraine, for instance, Musk provided Starlink technology to the Ukrainian government. However, he has since reportedly restricted usage of the network there in notable instances: In late 2022, multiple sources familiar told [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/investigations/musk-ordered-shutdown-starlink-satellite-service-ukraine-retook-territory-russia-2025-07-25/), Musk ordered that coverage be cut in the strategic region surrounding the city of Kherson, among other areas, which a Ukrainian military official told the outlet caused a communications blackout among the country’s troops. Around the same time, the New York _Times_ [reported](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/08/world/europe/elon-musk-ukraine-starlink-drones.html), Musk refused to let the Ukrainian military use the Starlink network to carry out a drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet. “The biggest national security risk is through Starlink, because countries depend on that for their national defense,” West says, referencing the company’s role in Ukraine. Technology from SpaceX has also been used in multiple NASA launches and satellites, which West argues could restrict the government’s ability to potentially take action against Musk. He points to Musk’s [departure](https://time.com/7289870/elon-musk-trump-leaving-administration-doge/) from DOGE and the ensuing public spat between the billionaire and Trump, who [traded insults](https://time.com/7291495/trump-says-great-relationship-with-musk-may-be-over/) online after Musk criticized the President’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.” During their feud, Musk claimed that Trump wouldn’t have won reelection without him and announced the creation of a [new political party](https://time.com/7300282/elon-musk-new-political-party-america-party-policies-trump-split/), while Trump pulled his nomination of Musk ally Jared Isaacman to lead NASA and [threatened](https://time.com/7293259/white-house-hints-at-thawing-of-trump-musk-feud/) to terminate the billionaire’s government contracts. The threats never evolved into anything more than words; the Administration discussed cancelling SpaceX’s contracts, the Wall Street _Journal_ [reported](https://www.wsj.com/business/trump-aides-discussed-ending-some-spacex-contracts-but-found-most-were-vital-d1cf9ab5?gaa%5Fat=eafs&gaa%5Fn=AWEtsqc019g5Y66w6AGmCWrZLMJ0kmAl%5Fr6gO7nSo%5FYtbI2eyaOQOBe7FsgM3A8itO0%3D&gaa%5Fts=69125846&gaa%5Fsig=Ogi3cOtb2Mw50mJ0OBKCpMQ7RvbTHVuAL5eq5YDnkV%5FlcDm%5FRKuA0SJ8NuXaQsEOTApTq67fYs10xqXtxj6AwA%3D%3D) over the summer, but ultimately determined they were too critical. And last week, Trump re-[nominated](https://www.reuters.com/science/trump-nominates-musk-ally-jared-isaacman-position-nasa-chief-2025-11-04/) Isaacman for the post of NASA administrator. Another recent move from the space agency, however, appeared to demonstrate the limits of the government’s reliance on SpaceX, and Musk’s ability to get his way. The Administration awarded a $2.89 billion contract to SpaceX in 2021 to develop a spacecraft that would take astronauts to the moon. But after the company’s Starship Rocket suffered a series of [failures](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-do-spacexs-starships-keep-exploding/), Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, currently the acting administrator of NASA, said he was going to “open up the contract” and “let other space companies compete with SpaceX,” triggering a series of insults from Musk. **Read more:** [_Musk Stumbles on the Way to the Moon_](https://time.com/7328257/musk-duffy-feud-nasa-spacex/) West warns that as Musk’s wealth continues to rise above that of his billionaire counterparts, he might not be so easily challenged. “The greater wealth he has the fewer constraints on him. Half a trillion already gives him tremendous insulation from other power centers. It puts him above government in many cases. Moving from half a trillion to a trillion simply magnifies that,” West says. “That makes him very risky for democratic systems.
