Waxman Staff Writer Oct 3, 2025 5:29 AM UTC [Taylor Swift](https://time.com/6342806/person-of-the-year-2023-taylor-swift/)’s 12th studio album [_The Life of a Showgirl_](https://time.com/7309009/taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl-new-album-announcement/)dropped Oct. 3, and [William Shakespeare](https://time.com/4303852/shakespeare-life-video/) buffs will relish in the title of the first track “The Fate of Ophelia” and accompanying music video, inspired by the tragic play _Hamlet_ (circa 1599-1601). In the song, Swift sings of her heart being saved "from the fate of Ophelia," an apparent reference to her fiancé, [Travis Kelce](https://time.com/7312427/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-engaged/). "And if you'd never come for me," goes the song. "I might've drowned in the melancholy." The titular Ophelia is known in Shakespeare's _Hamlet_ for tragically drowning after enduring rejection by Hamlet and his murder of her father. The line in Swift's song and _The Life of a Showgirl_'s cover art appears to be inspired by a Victorian-era painting that depicts the scene in _Hamlet_ when Ophelia goes crazy and falls into a stream and drowns after learning Hamlet killed her father. Back then, it was trendy to paint scenes from William Shakespeare plays, and Ophelia was a popular subject. De Agostini--Getty Images According to the Tate collection in the UK, artist Elizabeth Siddal posed for Millais over a four month period in a bath full of water kept warm by lamps underneath. Millais covered her body with flowers that signify love, pain, innocence, and faithfulness. The painting also inspired _Hamlet_ adaptations by Laurence Olivier (1948) and [Kenneth Branagh](https://time.com/6116562/belfast-review-kenneth-branagh/) (1996), as well as a 1995 music video for “Where The Wild Roses Grow” by [Kylie Minogue](https://time.com/6964176/kylie-minogue/) and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. The art news website _ArtNet_ even pointed out that the scene in season 3 of _White Lotus_ in which [Walton Goggins](https://time.com/7222100/white-lotus-season-3-walton-goggins-profile/) and [Aimee Lou Woods](https://time.com/3462505/nick-cave-20000-days-on-earth/) are floating dead in the water appears to invoke the Millais painting. Arguably the most famous depiction of Ophelia in pop culture in recent years is the 2019 film _Ophelia_, which reimagined _Hamlet_ from Ophelia’s point of view, with Daisy Ridley starring as Ophelia. Has it lived up to your expectations? I think so, I think so, yeah. So far, yeah. And it's honestly, it's only gonna get better. So I'm excited that it's more pop. I do like her slower songs, but I'm excited to get back to like 1989. Reputation vibes and the collaborators that she has on this album is going to be electric. I'm very excited. Yeah.
