Charlie’s murder was not just an attack on one man, on one movement. It was an attack on our entire nation. … The gun was pointed at him, but the bullet was aimed at all of us.” The funeral service featured heartfelt eulogies but also at times resembled a political rally, as Trump teased “one of the biggest announcements really medically I think in the history of our country” for Monday—“I think we found an answer to autism,” he said—and he took aim at “[antifa](https://time.com/7318188/antifa-anti-fascist-trump-major-terrorist-organization-designation-legal-enforcement/),” [Jimmy Kimmel](https://time.com/7318177/jimmy-kimmel-live-preempt-indefinitely-abc-nexstar-fcc-kirk-trump/), and [Chicago](https://time.com/7315149/trump-chicago-threat-war-pritzker/), among others usual targets. “He was a missionary with a noble spirit and a great, great purpose. He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them,” Trump said of Kirk. “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent, and I don’t want the best for them. I’m sorry.” The event, which also featured a number of speakers from the Administration as well as influential figures on the right like Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump Jr., was held in a suburb of Phoenix, where Kirk’s influential conservative organization Turning Point USA is based. “From this desert, Charlie Kirk built a movement,” Vice President J.D. Vance said at the funeral. “He transformed the face of conservatism in our own time, and in doing so, he changed the course of American history.” Carlson, the former Fox News host, appeared to promote a conspiracy theory that Israel was involved in Kirk’s assassination, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly [rejected](https://www.timesofisrael.com/rejecting-far-right-conspiracy-theory-netanyahu-reiterates-israel-didnt-kill-charlie-kirk/) last week. Carlson compared Kirk’s assassination to the execution of Jesus Christ, saying: “I can just picture the scene in a lamplit room with a bunch of guys sitting around eating hummus thinking about ‘What do we do about this guy telling the truth about us? We must make him stop talking!’ And there’s always one guy with the bright idea, and I can just hear him say, ‘Why don’t we just kill him? That’ll shut him up. That’ll fix the problem.’ It doesn’t work that way.” Kirk’s wife, Erika Kirk, who has been outspoken in the aftermath of her husband’s death and has been tapped to take over her husband’s Turning Point brand, also referenced Jesus Christ in her tribute to her husband and promised to continue Kirk’s work. “I saw the wound that ended his life,” Erika Kirk said in a tear-filled speech. “I felt everything you would expect to feel. I felt shock, I felt horror, and a level of heartache that I didn’t even know existed.” “But there was something else too,” she added. “Even in death, I could see the man that I love.” Erika Kirk said that her husband had “wanted to save young men just like the one who took his life,” and she announced that she forgave the man who killed Kirk.
