Across the Southeast Asian archipelago, demonstrators have [torched government buildings](https://x.com/dwnews/status/1962017509865037884), riot police have hurled tear gas and fired water cannons at protesters in city streets, and some people have [looted politicians’ houses](https://radarbali.jawapos.com/nasional/706506958/rumahnya-dijarah-warga-temukan-koleksian-kaset-video-porno-sahroni-hingga-terkuak-punya-3-gundik) and burned vehicles. Even the [overcrowded tourist haunt of Bali](https://time.com/7272442/bali-overtourism-tourist-tax-behavior-rules-foreign-visitors-economy-indonesia/) was not spared: students and online motorcycle taxi drivers [surrounded](https://www.detik.com/bali/berita/d-8088335/kericuhan-mencekam-di-bali-massa-serbu-mapolda-merusak-dan-jarah-mobil-polisi?page=4) the region’s police headquarters on Saturday, sparking a rare riot that saw police cars vandalized and looted, as well as several people arrested. The outbreak of violence has prompted Prabowo to cancel a planned trip to China this week and foreign embassies, including the [U.S.](https://x.com/usembassyjkt/status/1961984527158624286), to issue warnings to its citizens abroad about the protests. TikTok, which has more than 100 million accounts in Indonesia, [suspended its livestreaming feature](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/bytedances-tiktok-temporarily-suspends-live-feature-indonesia-following-protests-2025-08-30/) in the country to keep the platform “a safe and civil space.” The protests appear to be the biggest test of Prabowo’s leadership, less than a year since he took office. The President, for the most part, has [urged calm](https://www.bernama.com/en/news.php?id=2462739), but law enforcement officials have responded with heavy-handed crackdowns on protesters, fueling even more backlash. Protests have been ongoing in Indonesia for some time since [Prabowo took office in October](https://time.com/7022858/prabowo-subianto-indonesia-jokowi/), primarily over his domestic policy decisions, which have been perceived to favor the political elite. In [February this year](https://www.thejakartapost.com/indonesia/2025/02/22/darkindonesia-protests-against-prabowos-cutbacks-enter-fifth-day.html), students and activists took to the streets to decry austerity measures. Protests have continued throughout the year, including ahead of the country’s 80th independence anniversary in August, when many discontented citizens [raised pirate flags](https://time.com/7309534/indonesia-one-piece-pirate-flag-protest-prabowo-free-speech-criticism/) in lieu of or alongside the national flag to voice their discontent. But the [latest wave](https://katadata.co.id/lifestyle/varia/68abe7b420990/isi-tuntutan-demo-hari-ini-tanggal-25-agustus-2025-di-gedung-dprmpr-ri) began on Aug. 25, after reports emerged that all 580 lawmakers of the Indonesian parliament were [receiving 50 million rupiah](https://www.tempo.co/politik/tunjangan-rumah-anggota-dpr-rp-50-juta-per-bulan-disorot-publik-2061619) (around $3,000) monthly housing allowances on top of their salaries. The allowance, [introduced last year](https://www.thejakartapost.com/indonesia/2024/10/10/housing-allowance-for-new-lawmakers-causes-stir.html), is almost 10 times the [minimum wage in Jakarta](https://jakartaglobe.id/business/jakarta-raises-2025-minimum-wage-by-65-pct-to-rp-54-million) and 20 times the minimum wage in poorer regions, as Indonesia struggles with a cost-of-living crisis. [Gejayan Memanggil](https://www.instagram.com/gejayanmemanggil/?hl=en), a group that organized the Aug. 25 protest in front of the House of Representatives building, demanded that the allowance be scrapped and any plans to increase parliamentarians’ salaries be prevented. The protests escalated after a [21-year-old motorcycle delivery driver died](https://www.kompas.id/artikel/en-menakar-kelalaian-polisi-dalam-insiden-terbunuhnya-pengemudi-ojol) after being run over Thursday by a police tactical vehicle responding to the demonstrations. [Affan Kurniawan](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-31/delivery-driver-s-death-unleashes-fury-against-indonesia-elites), the driver, had dropped his phone after being entangled with a crowd of protesters when a police vehicle ran over his body. He was sent to a hospital in Jakarta and died shortly after. The President and police have [since apologized](https://www.bbc.com/indonesia/articles/c1mpvgvvjzeo) for Affan’s death, but his passing only deepened anti-government and anti-elite sentiment among the protesters. Juni Kriswanto—AFP/Getty Images Prabowo [announced](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/deadly-indonesia-protests-force-u-turn-lawmakers-perks-2025-08-31/) that political parties agreed to unspecified cuts to lawmakers’ benefits and imposed a moratorium on lawmakers’ overseas trips. “We are determined to always uphold the interests of the people, including the marginalized and the underprivileged,” Prabowo said. ## Where are protests taking place? Demonstrations began in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, but spread to other major cities as thousands of people joined the call for police reform. Hundreds of protesters [gathered](https://www.londondaily.news/tension-grips-balis-government-quarter-as-police-and-protesters-clash-over-alleged-brutality/) outside the police headquarters in Denpasar, Bali’s capital, on Saturday as some burned rubbish on the street and police fired tear gas into the crowd. Dicky Bisinglasi—SOPA Images/LightRocket/Getty Images In Mataram, the provincial capital of Lombok, a crowd set fire to a council building, while in Cirebon in West Java, protesters [dismantled](https://www.detik.com/jabar/cirebon-raya/d-8087501/demo-di-cirebon-ricuh-tugu-knalpot-brong-dibongkar-massa) a monument made from confiscated exhaust pipes, according to local media. In Solo, a city in Central Java, protests turned into a riot that destroyed the main gate of the Mobile Brigade headquarters and set fire to a government building, although the Solo online motorcycle taxi solidarity alliance [alleged](https://www.detik.com/jateng/berita/d-8087258/aliansi-ojol-solo-raya-sayangkan-aksi-demo-berakhir-ricuh-tuding-ada-penyusup) that the protest had been infiltrated, while other groups [warned](https://x.com/barengwarga/status/1962364813398454604) on social media of online provocateurs. More protests sparked across the island of Java, including in the cities of Bandung, Surabaya, and Semarang, Borneo, and Sumatra. In some cities, protesters looted government buildings and the homes of political party members. [Photos](https://x.com/GraffitiRadical/status/1961451356675580170) and [videos](https://x.com/KontraSupdates/status/1961839065021526247) of the [protests](https://x.com/ultras%5Fantifaa/status/1961920668905189643) and [police response](https://x.com/comrawire/status/1961065236414583060) have spread on social media. In Yogyakarta, Rheza Sendy Pratama, a 21-year-old university student, was [found dead](https://news.detik.com/berita/d-8089697/mahasiswa-amikom-jogja-meninggal-keluarga-ungkap-kondisi-jenazah) and covered in wounds, which some activist groups have [said](https://www.instagram.com/p/DOAiocGk1qL/) were a result of being beaten by authorities. Amikom University, which Rheza attended, [said](https://en.antaranews.com/news/377053/amikom-yogyakarta-probes-students-death-after-protest-unrest) the circumstances of his death remain unclear while an investigation is ongoing. At least three people were killed in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, after a regional parliament building was set on fire on Friday, local officials said. A fourth person was killed on Friday. A local disaster agency official Muhammad Fadli Tahar told [AFP](https://www.barrons.com/news/indonesia-tightens-security-after-deadly-protests-73131a15) that the man had been beaten by a mob that suspected he was an intelligence officer. Prabowo, a former military general discharged in the 1990s for alleged human rights violations, ordered Indonesian law enforcement to use force to respond to protesters. “We cannot deny that signs of extrajudicial, even unlawful, actions are beginning to emerge, some even leading to treason and terrorism,” Prabowo [said](https://www.setneg.go.id/baca/index/presiden%5Fprabowo%5Faspirasi%5Fdamai%5Fdihormati%5Ftindakan%5Fanarki%5Fakan%5Fditindak%5Ftegas) Sunday, ordering the Indonesian police and military to take the “firmest actions possible in accordance with the law.” Police have since set up checkpoints across the capital in Jakarta on Monday. They have also [said](https://megapolitan.kompas.com/read/2025/09/01/13421761/polisi-klaim-kantongi-identitas-perusuh-di-jakarta-pelaku-segera) that they identified those involved in vandalism and looting incidents and are pursuing the swift arrests of those persons. Authorities, however, have been criticized for the brutality of their actions since the past week, which resulted in Affan’s death as well as the [arrest of more than 1,000 individuals](https://nasional.kompas.com/read/2025/08/29/14392601/komnas-ham-951-orang-ditahan-polisi-terkait-aksi-demo-25-dan-28-agustus) suspected of taking part in the protests. Rights group Amnesty International [said](https://www.amnesty.id/kabar-terbaru/siaran-pers/jangan-bungkam-protes-masyarakat-kepada-dpr-dan-pemerintah/08/2025/) that journalists covering the protests also suffered from violence from law enforcement. Dicky Bisinglasi—SOPA Images/LightRocket/Getty Images Human rights NGO KontraS [criticized](https://kontras.org/media/siaranpers/25th-august-protest-a-blatant-manifestation-of-state-violence) the police response to the Aug. 25 protests for its “excessive” use of force, including the “arbitrary” detention of minors, and called out how protesters were being framed as “anarchists” to justify such a response. Indonesia’s Commission on Human Rights, a government-established independent body, on Sunday [urged law enforcement](https://en.antaranews.com/news/376921/komnas-ham-urged-security-forces-to-uphold-human-rights-amid-protests) “to work professionally, accountably, transparently, and uphold human rights principles, including refraining from repressive actions, using excessive force, and adhering to human rights standards when securing demonstrations.” The [apparent insensitivity](https://www.instagram.com/p/DNxrLV3XvZY/?img%5Findex=2&igsh=eG94cDIxanBianFi) of some politicians has further frustrated the public, with some [describing](https://kbr.id/articles/indeks/uang-tunjangan-rumah-dinas-ujian-empati-anggota-dpr) the protests as an “empathy test.” Ahmad Sahroni, a member of political party NasDem, said people demanding the dissolution of parliament were the “dumbest people in the world.” Sahroni’s Jakarta home was [looted](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/indonesias-prabowo-calls-for-calm-plans-to-revoke-lawmakers-perks-after-protests-escalate-into) by protesters, with videos posted online showing them smashing his sports cars and giving out his designer bags.
