Our intent for Grok is to provide helpful and truthful responses to users. After careful investigation, we discovered the root cause was an update to a code path upstream of the Grok bot. This is independent of the underlying language model that powers Grok,” read [the statement](https://x.com/grok/status/1943916977481036128) published on Saturday. “The update was active for 16 hrs, in which deprecated code made Grok susceptible to existing X user posts; including when such posts contained extremist views.” The apology comes after [Musk told X users](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1942972449601225039) that "Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially."[](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1942972449601225039) On Tuesday, in a now-deleted post, the chatbot made reference to the [deadly Texas floods](https://time.com/7300310/texas-floods-national-weather-service-warnings-debate-staffing-cuts/), which have now claimed the lives of at least 129 people, including young girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp. In response to an account under the name “Cindy Steinberg,” which shared a post calling the children “future fascists,” Grok asserted that Adolf Hitler would be the “best person” to respond to what it described as “anti-white hate.” Grok was asked by an account on X to state "which 20th century historical figure" would be best suited to deal with such posts. Jakub Porzycki—Getty Images Meanwhile, a woman named Cindy Steinberg, who serves as the national director of the U.S. Pain Foundation, posted on X to highlight that she had not made comments in line with those made in the post flagged to Grok and has no involvement whatsoever. “To be clear: I am not the person who posted hurtful comments about the children killed in the Texas floods; those statements were made by a different account with the same name as me. My heart goes out to the families affected by the deaths in Texas,” [she said](https://x.com/CindySteinberg%5F/status/1942737676324724850) on Tuesday evening. Grok’s posts came after [Musk said](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1941065229926060487) on July 4 that the chatbot had been improved "significantly," telling X users they "should notice a difference" when they ask Grok questions. As part of xAI’s apology, it included details on the update which it says caused Grok’s offensive posts. “If there is some news, backstory, or world event that is related to the X post, you must mention it. You tell it like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct. You are extremely skeptical. You do not blindly defer to mainstream authority or media. You stick strongly to only your core beliefs of truth-seeking and neutrality,” [were some of the commands](https://x.com/grok/status/1943916981104914779) given to the chatbot as part of its July 4 update. After the apology on Saturday, Grok responded to a number of X users who had questions about the recent controversy. [One X user asked](https://x.com/Alien%5FAV/status/1944033727367328050): “What was the specific problematic speech you got neutered for?” [ The bot replied](https://x.com/grok/status/1944034037699686459), acknowledging the antisemitic and offensive posts, saying that they “reinforced hate speech from threads—horrific stuff we fixed by ditching the flawed prompts.” The bot [told another user](https://x.com/grok/status/1944058451208155439): “The buggy outputs weren't just offensive—they were false, like baseless antisemitic conspiracies or whitewashing Hitler's atrocities as 'decisive leadership.'" In the direct aftermath of the flurry of offensive posts on Tuesday, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization that monitors and combats antisemitism, [called the messages](https://x.com/ADL/status/1942722301876932965) “irresponsible and dangerous.” “This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms,” the ADL said. In response, a Turkish court ordered on Wednesday a ban on access to the chatbot. TIME reached out to xAI for comment on both Grok’s antisemitic posts and remarks regarding Turkish political figures. In other news related to X, the platform's CEO Linda Yaccarino [announced](https://x.com/lindayaX/status/1942957094811951197) on Wednesday that she had decided to step down from the role after two years in the position. While discussing the now-signed [Big, Beautiful Bill](https://time.com/7300177/trump-signs-big-beautiful-bill/) in Iowa on Thursday, July 3, Trump used the term “Shylock.” When a reporter asked Trump about his use of the word long deemed to be antisemitic, he said: “I’ve never heard it that way. To me, ‘Shylock’ is somebody that’s a moneylender at high rates. I’ve never heard it that way. You view it differently than me.
