Trump was also asked during the press briefing how he responded to Mamdani’s vow to defy ICE agents, to which the President [replied](https://www.axios.com/2025/07/01/trump-mamdani-arrest-ice-immigration), “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him.” Mamdani took to social media hours later to slam the President’s comments, saying that Trump had threatened to arrest him “not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.” “His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you,” Mamdani said in his statement. “We will not accept this intimidation.” The Trump Administration’s [mass-deportation operation](https://time.com/7291757/trump-deportation-ice-el-salvador/) has sparked widespread controversy and criticism, including among New York politicians. In June, New York City comptroller Brad Lander, a candidate in the Democratic primary race for mayor at the time, was [detained](https://time.com/7295152/brad-lander-arrest-immigration-court/) by federal agents at a Manhattan immigration courthouse as he sought to escort an individual that federal officials were seemingly attempting to arrest. Lander had been observing immigration court hearings after a [growing number of reports](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/12/nyregion/immigration-courthouse-arrests-trump-deportation.html) that immigrants attending court proceedings there were being arrested by ICE agents. Protests over Trump’s aggressive immigration policies soon [spread to many other cities](https://time.com/7292495/ice-immigration-protests-la-national/) across the country, including New York City. ## Transcript Does President Trump want Zoran Mamdani deported? I haven't heard him say that. I haven't heard him call for that. But certainly he does not want this individual to be elected. I was just speaking to him about it and his radical policies that will completely crush New York City, which is obviously a city that the president holds near and dear to his heart. There's this Congressman, Andy Ogles. He wants the Attorney General Bondi, to explore Denaturalization proceedings because he thinks Mamdani could have misrepresented or concealed material support for terrorism based on rap lyrics he wrote in 2017. Does President Trump think this is a worthwhile use of the attorney general's time? Well, I'll let the president speak to that. I have not seen those claims, but surely if they are true, it's something that should be investigated. The president is always willing to work with everyone. He's working with Democrats across the country, Democrat governors. And he said he'll work with people on the far left. He works with Republicans. He works with people in the middle. He wants to do what's right for America. But surely someone who holds these values and is quite literally a communist and condemns every value that makes this country great common sense, law and order, low taxes, working hard and earning your keep in this country. He's against all of that. And I think the president would find it difficult to work with someone like that if he is elected. I'm sure you'll hear more from the president on that, but we'll have to see.
