All were in stable condition. The collision, which took place in a packed city center as fans were celebrating Liverpool F.C. winning the English Premier League, injured 65 people, including four children. “Scenes of joy turned to utter horror and devastation, and my thoughts and the thoughts of the whole country are with all of those that are affected, those injured, which of course includes children, their families, their friends, the whole community, Liverpool fans everywhere,” U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer [said](https://news.sky.com/video/starmer-uk-stands-with-liverpool-after-car-ploughed-into-crowds-at-parade-13375367) following the incident. Police in Merseyside, the county where Liverpool is located, said that a 53-year-old British man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while “unfit through drugs.” The incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism. This is the latest major car-ramming incident [in a worrying trend across the globe](https://time.com/7288733/liverpool-car-vehicle-ramming-attacks-trend-prevention-what-to-do/). In April, [11 people were killed](https://time.com/7280841/vancouver-attack-filipino-community-support-victims-fundraisers-how-to-help/) and dozens injured in Vancouver, Canada during a Filipino heritage festival in the city. Here’s what we know so far about the car-ramming in Liverpool. ## How did the car-ramming in Liverpool happen? An [estimated 1 million people](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/13375112/liverpool-trophy-parade-man-arrested-after-car-collides-with-pedestrians-in-city-centre#:~:text='We%20saw%20a%20car%20run,the%202019%20Champions%20League%20parade.) were in downtown Liverpool on Monday attending an open-bus trophy parade celebrating their team’s Premier League Championship. At around 6 p.m. local time, a car drove into the crowd on Water Street, hitting dozens of people. Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims [said on Tuesday](https://www.merseyside.police.uk/news/merseyside/news/2025/may-2025/water-street-statements-from-assistant-chief-constable-jenny-sims-and-detective-chief-superintendent-karen-jaundrill/) that event organizers and authorities had put a “robust traffic management plan” in place ahead of the event and a number of roads, including Water Street, were closed to traffic. Police believe the driver of the car involved in the incident, a Ford Galaxy, was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after a road block was temporarily lifted to allow the emergency vehicle to respond to a suspected heart attack, Sims said. Although the car stopped and slowed down on various occasions, as seen in video taken by witnesses,the vehicle [continuedwest on Water Street](https://news.sky.com/story/man-detained-after-car-collides-with-several-pedestrians-during-liverpool-fc-victory-parade-13375116?postid=9647055#liveblog-body) as people tried to avoid it. One eyewitness, BBC reporter Matt Cole, said the car was being chased by men “who were trying to bang on the side of it and throw things at it,” the broadcaster [reported](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8209lzzp4o). Another eyewitness, Peter Jones, [told Sky News](https://news.sky.com/story/man-detained-after-car-collides-with-several-pedestrians-during-liverpool-fc-victory-parade-13375116?postid=9646219#liveblog-body): “We heard a frantic beeping ahead, a car flew past me and my mate, people were chasing it and trying to stop him, windows smashed at the back.” The car was eventually stopped at the scene, with [people and nearby police officers swarming toward the vehicle](https://news.sky.com/story/man-detained-after-car-collides-with-several-pedestrians-during-liverpool-fc-victory-parade-13375116?postid=9646152#liveblog-body). ## Who has been injured? Merseyside Police said Tuesday that 65 people were injured. “Following the incident yesterday, I can confirm on behalf of the National Health Service that we are aware of 50 people who were treated at hospitals across the region. Of those, 11 remain in hospital for ongoing treatment. They are all in a stable condition and I’m pleased to say they appear to be recovering well,” said Sims on Tuesday afternoon. Dave Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service said at a press conference on Monday night that teams treated 20 people at the scene for “minor injuries” that did not require hospitalization. He added that one paramedic was struck by the vehicle but did not sustain injuries. Chief Fire Officer Nick Searle from Mersey Fire and Rescue Service said that three fire engines were on the scene within four minutes of the collision and arrived to four people stuck under a vehicle. “Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed people from beneath and passed them to our Ambulance colleagues. We then worked with emergency service partners to ensure casualties received medical treatment and transport to hospital as quickly as possible,” Searle added. ## Who is the suspected attacker? Merseyside Police said the 53-year-old suspect is a white British man who they believe to be the driver of the vehicle. “We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism,” said Sims at the Monday night press conference. But authorities were praised for their quick response to the incident and swift updates. “The police acted very, very quickly, really swiftly, to put paid to speculation.
