A January[ news release from the Internal Revenue Service](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-jan-27-start-to-2025-tax-filing-season-agency-continues-historic-improvements-to-expand-enhance-tools-and-filing-options-to-help-taxpayers) (IRS) said that “more than half of all tax returns are expected to be filed this year with the help of a tax professional.” The IRS also urged people once more to use a “trusted tax pro to avoid potential scams and schemes.” For those who have yet to file their taxes, here is what you need to know about the 2025 tax deadline and how to apply for an extension. ## **When is the 2025 tax deadline?** Per usual, the tax deadline for this year is April 15—the U.S. tax day, which falls on a Tuesday in 2025. Though the deadline is April 15, the IRS predicted in January [that more than 140 million](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-jan-27-start-to-2025-tax-filing-season-agency-continues-historic-improvements-to-expand-enhance-tools-and-filing-options-to-help-taxpayers) individual tax returns for the tax year 2024 would be filed ahead of the deadline. [Disaster victims in 12 states](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-reminder-disaster-victims-in-twelve-states-have-automatic-extensions-to-file-and-pay-their-2024-taxes) have automatic extensions to file and pay their 2024 taxes. Though some of these extensions only apply to certain populations within said states. [For California wildfire victims](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-california-wildfire-victims-qualify-for-tax-relief-various-deadlines-postponed-to-oct-15), per the IRS, "these taxpayers now have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.” For victims of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in various states including [West Virginia](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-tax-relief-for-victims-of-post-tropical-storm-helene-in-west-virginia-various-deadlines-postponed-to-may-1-2025), Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina—and parts of Tennessee and Virginia—the deadlines[ have been extended to May 1, 2025](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-help-available-to-victims-of-hurricanes-helene-and-milton-may-1-deadline-now-applies-to-individuals-and-businesses) to file for the 2024 fiscal year. It’s important to note, however, that [according to the IRS,](https://www.irs.gov/filing/get-an-extension-to-file-your-tax-return) this extension is only for “filing” your returns. "An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay," the IRS instructs. ## **How can you file for a tax extension?** You can file for a tax extension [in three different ways.](https://www.irs.gov/filing/get-an-extension-to-file-your-tax-return#:~:text=More%20In%20File&text=If%20you%20need%20more%20time,only%20for%20filing%20your%20return.) Taxpayers can use [IRS Free File](https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-free-file-do-your-taxes-for-free) to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension. Alternatively, when paying taxes using [an online payment option](https://www.irs.gov/payments)—including a wire transfer or a credit card— via the IRS website, taxpayers can check the box that says they are paying as part of filing for an extension. Lastly, those filing personal tax returns can file [Form 4868,](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-4868) also known as the “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” (Businesses can apply for an extension using [Form 7004](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-7004).) Form 4868 can be filed by mail, online with an IRS e-filing partner, or through a tax professional. Applicants will need to include the taxpayer’s name, address, Social Security number, and several payment estimations for the 2025 tax filing season. Though those who file for an extension still need to pay their taxes, filing Form 4868 itself does not incur a fee. ## **What is the deadline to file for a tax extension?** The deadline to file for an extension is the same as tax day itself—Tuesday, April 15. **Read More**: [_How to Prepare For the New Social Security ID Policy Ahead of Its Initiation in April_](https://time.com/7272921/social-security-new-identity-proofing-policy-how-to-prepare/) ## **What are the pros and cons of filing for a tax extension, according to experts?** Tyler Horn, head of planning at [Origin](https://www.useorigin.com/), an all-in-one financial management platform, says there are many pros for filing for an extension—the primary one being that taxpayers don’t have to rush. “If you rush, you can make mistakes,” says Horn. “It's much better to make sure you're reporting your income the right way than it is to rush through the process, and then you \[might\] miss something, then there's a mistake on your taxes, and that leads to more headaches down the line.” He adds that some taxpayers may have not yet received certain tax documents they need—especially business owners. The tax extension allows time to get all your documents together and updated. A study conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Origin [found that 41% of Americans](https://www.useorigin.com/resources/blog/majority-of-gen-z-plan-to-doom-spend-tax-refund-as-recession-fears-rise) have delayed filing their taxes this year. The major reason cited, particularly by Gen Z and millennials, was financial stress. “I think some people may believe that filing your taxes is a super strenuous process,” Horn says. “I found that the best advice is: ‘Don't rush. Everything's gonna be okay. Just file an extension if you need to.
