(Syria also [reported](https://twitter.com/SanaAjel/status/1781206487861195097 "undefined") a simultaneous attack by Israel.) [ABC News](https://abcnews.go.com/International/live-updates/israel-gaza-hamas-war/?id=108860743 "undefined"), [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/israel-iran-missile-strikes/ "undefined"), [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/18/1245763498/israel-iran-missile-strikes "undefined"), and others have cited unnamed U.S. officials in reporting that one or more missiles were launched by the Israeli military at Iran. Citing two unnamed U.S. officials, [Bloomberg News](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-19/blasts-heard-near-air-base-in-iran-s-isfahan-semi-official-fars "undefined") reported that Israeli officials had warned U.S. officials earlier on Thursday that it planned to attack Iran in the next 24-48 hours. An unnamed senior U.S. official also told [CNN](https://edition.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-04-18-24/h%5F70d319bd5617de315c6580dc1fef9f6c "undefined") that the U.S. was warned of Israel’s planned retaliatory action, a response the official said the U.S. “didn’t endorse.” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani [said Friday](https://apnews.com/article/g7-italy-blinken-iran-bf8b33c3cebfe534a16675e6adc3fb0a "undefined") that the U.S. told G7 ministers at their summit in Italy it was “informed at the last minute” by Israel about the drones. Israel has not publicly acknowledged the strike. ## **What we know about the latest strike** An unnamed Israeli official told the [_Washington Post_](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/04/19/israel-iran-strike-isfahan/ "undefined") that the attack was intended to send a message to Iran that Israel had the ability to strike inside the country. Details of the strike, including its scale and the extent of the damage, remain unclear. FARS, a news agency managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, [reported](https://twitter.com/FarsNews%5FAgency/status/1781148585486107116 "undefined") that explosions occurred near Isfahan—a city some 340 km. south of Tehran that hosts key military sites, including a major airbase and nuclear facilities. It [later clarified](https://twitter.com/FarsNews%5FAgency/status/1781155022488711334 "undefined") that the nuclear facility is completely safe, according to “informed sources,” and the International Atomic Energy Agency [confirmed](https://twitter.com/iaeaorg/status/1781196309329793463 "undefined") there was no damage to Iran’s nuclear sites. Iranian state-affiliated news agency [IRNA](https://twitter.com/IRNA%5F1313/status/1781146178265944554 "undefined") reported that Iran’s air defense system had been activated in the skies of several provinces, following explosions heard in and around Isfahan. The source of the explosion was a “defense shot,” fired after the air defense in Tabriz, a city northwest of Isfahan, saw a “suspicious object,” IRNA [reported](https://twitter.com/IRNA%5F1313/status/1781150565684089103 "undefined"), adding that the city was in “complete peace.” Hossein Dalirian, an Iranian space agency spokesperson, [said on X](https://twitter.com/HosseinDalirian/status/1781148323627372573 "undefined") that reports of a foreign missile attack were “not true” and that it was [three “microbirds”](https://twitter.com/HosseinDalirian/status/1781161278993530966 "undefined") that were shot down. “So far no large-scale hit and explosion caused by any air threat has been reported,” said [IRNA](https://twitter.com/IRNA%5F1313/status/1781164442027176387 "undefined"), while state broadcasters have shown [videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGD7O94LkG4&ab%5Fchannel=AssociatedPress "undefined") of life appearing normal in Isfahan—though their credibility is questionable after being found to [promote misinformation](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/16/1244920615/iran-israel-fake-social-media-disinformation "undefined") as recently as earlier this week. ## Fears of escalation The apparent Israeli retaliation comes just days after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel over the weekend, most of which were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems as well as those of its [allies](https://time.com/6966758/how-the-u-s-rallied-to-defend-israel-from-irans-massive-attack/ "undefined") and [neighbors](https://www.businessinsider.com/arab-states-iran-israel-air-missile-drone-attack-saudi-jordan-2024-4 "undefined"). The weekend attack sparked widespread fears of a sharp [escalation of conflict](https://time.com/6967055/how-israel-may-respond-to-iran-attack/ "undefined"), as regional tensions have heightened amid Israel’s war in Gaza. As world leaders urged Israel to refrain from a counterattack, Iran said that it considered the matter “[concluded](https://twitter.com/Iran%5FUN/status/1779269993043022053 "undefined").” In recent days, foreign governments concerned about rising violence in the Middle East have [warned](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/12/france-india-russia-uk-issue-travel-warnings-over-israel-iran-tensions "undefined") their citizens against traveling to or remaining in the region. On Wednesday, the Dutch government [told](https://www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl/reisadvies/iran "undefined") its citizens to “leave Iran if you can do so safely.” And Australian authorities on Friday [urged](https://twitter.com/Smartraveller/status/1781154742863020268 "undefined") Australians to leave Israel and Palestinian territories “if it’s safe to do so.” The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem issued a [security alert](https://il.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-jerusalem-april-19-2024/ "undefined") on Friday restricting U.S. government employees in Israel and their families from traveling for personal reasons outside greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva, and reminding U.S. citizens in Israel to take caution. Several U.S. Congress members, including [Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)](https://twitter.com/marcorubio/status/1781152258660380743 "undefined"), have posted on social media in support of Israel. With overwhelming bipartisan support, the House [passed](https://clerk.house.gov/evs/2024/roll141.xml "undefined") a [resolution](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/1143 "undefined") earlier on Thursday condemning Iran’s weekend attack and affirming support for Israel’s right to defend itself.
