And of course, things began with one of Corden’s classic segments of [Carpool Karaoke.](http://time.com/5291540/james-corden-adam-levine-carpool-karaoke/) Mendes and Corden blasted some of the artist’s biggest songs, from “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” to “In My Blood” and “Lost in Japan” off his new album, and his earlier hits like “Mercy” and “Treat You Better.” But they also took the time to joke around, between chatting about his new solo digs in Toronto, their mutual affection for Justin Bieber and Mendes’s nearly-superfan-status love of Harry Potter. (Featuring some excellent costume changes that Mendes plays off with deadpan delivery.) But they really take it to another level when they quit the car and take the show to a hockey rink where Mendes — who’s Canadian — faces off against goalie Corden in a quick shoot-out, showing off his prowess on ice. Corden, unfortunately, doesn’t have quite the same level of comfort at the rink. This is just the beginning for Mendes’s appearances on the show, as he’ll continue to appear nightly during the week. _Shawn Mendes_ is his third consecutive number one album, and he’ll take it on tour next spring. ## Transcript [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] ```json [{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"NewsArticle","@id":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/","mainEntityOfPage":{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/"},"headline":"Harry Potter Superfan Shawn Mendes Crushed His Carpool Karaoke Appearance with James Corden","datePublished":"2018-06-05T15:33:16.000Z","dateModified":"2026-08-04T08:02:51.648Z","description":"For his weeklong takeover of James Corden's 'Late Late Show,' Shawn Mendes kicked things off with an energetic 'Carpool Karaoke' segment.","url":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/","keywords":["Newsfeed","Music","Late Night Television"],"thumbnailUrl":"","author":[{"@type":"Person","name":"Raisa Bruner","jobTitle":null,"url":"https://time.com/author/raisa-bruner/"}],"articleSection":"","image":[],"publisher":{"@type":"Organization","name":"Time","url":"https://time.com/","logo":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://time.com/images/logo.png","width":528,"height":156},"foundingDate":"March 3, 1923","sameAs":["https://www.facebook.com/time","https://www.instagram.com/time/?hl=en","https://twitter.com/time","https://www.pinterest.com/timemagazine"]}},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"BreadcrumbList","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"item":{"@id":"/tag/time-section-newsfeed/","name":"Newsfeed"}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"item":{"@id":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/","name":"Harry Potter Superfan Shawn Mendes Crushed His Carpool Karaoke Appearance with James Corden"}}]},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Shawn Mendes Performs at the TIME 100 Gala","description":"Singer Shawn Mendes performs for attendees at the 2018 TIME 100 Gala.","thumbnailUrl":"https://cdn.jwplayer.com/v2/media/jcGe3Do5/poster.jpg?width=720","uploadDate":"2018-04-25T01:43:00.000Z","contentUrl":"https://cdn.jwplayer.com/manifests/jcGe3Do5.m3u8","embedUrl":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/","duration":"PT1M14S","potentialAction":{"@type":"SeekToAction","target":"https://time.com/5301739/shawn-mendes-carpool-karaoke/?jw_start={seek_to_second_number}","startOffset-input":"required name=seek_to_second_number"}}] ```
