The cover features an animation narrated by Gates which tells the story of [Mohamad Nasir, an Ethiopian boy, who Gates first met shortly after Mohamad’s birth in 2012](http://time.com/5071035/meet-the-five-year-old-boy-bill-gates-put-on-the-cover-of-time). Well here's where we are today, nearly a half a billion women worldwide cannot read. That's more than the population of the United States of America. If the 130 million out- of- school girls made up a country, it would be the tenth largest in the world. The size of the UK and France combined. Closing the global gender gap in education could generate 112 to $ 152 million a year for the economies of developing countries. Wait, did I say millions? I meant 112 to $ 152 billion a year for the economies of developing countries, that's more than Amazon's annual revenue A girl in the world's poorest countries could go to school for $ 1. 17 a day that is less than the cost of fidget spinner, a pack of gum, a slice of pizza, a hit song on iTunes, son by an extremely tall, handsome, ageless, wait, this is aging rock star When girls are educated, they have better job opportunities and their earning potential rises. An additional year of schooling for girls is estimated to result in a 12 % increase in wages. When girls are educated, the chances of marrying below the age of 18 decline with each stage of education, reducing the risk of maternal and child death. When girls are educated it saves lives. Educating every girl to secondary level in sub- Saharan Africa could help save the lives of 1. 2 million children. So what can you do to help close the gap?
