Despite the somewhat wonky subject matter, the videos have gained a viral following online. Kornbluth credits the interest in their work to Americans’ current frustrations, and he hopes to offer some explanation of how the country got here in his new documentary featuring Reich, called _Saving Capitalism_. As Kornbluth told TIME, “When I started making _Saving Capitalism_ the frontrunners for the election were [Jeb Bush](http://time.com/4778924/jeb-bush-school-choice-disabilities/) and [Hillary Clinton](http://time.com/5030586/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-sexual-assault/). And what Reich’s great insight was, that I thought was interesting enough to pick up a camera for, is that this would be the last establishment year before something anti-establishment would change the whole political economic system. I didn’t know that Trump was going to win the election. I don’t think Reich knew if Trump was going to win the election. But you could see that the big story coming was this giant anti-establishment wave. You could see if you just looked at the economic system that for many years people were getting screwed. They were getting frustrated. And they were going to change the way we thought of what it meant to be a Democrat or a Republican. So we knew that going into the film.” _Saving Capitalism_ debuts on Netflix Nov. 21. ## Transcript [00:00] There's a huge amount of anger and frustration. So [00:04] many people desperately wanting to be heard. [00:07] [ INAUDIBLE ] And nobody [00:11] is listening. It's up to us to change the rules. It's been a [00:14] long standing strategy of get the people [00:19] who are in the bottom 90 % of the economic [00:22] distribution to fight among themselves so that they [00:25] don't focus on the real problem in front of them. How [00:27] do we get those folks to see their economic interest or [00:29] shared That's what we hope to do with the [00:34] film. [ MUSIC ] Robert Wright who is the center [00:39] of saving capitalism is a professor, an intellectual. And [00:43] I make videos with him, two to three minutes video that [00:45] I think over the year and half have been viewed. Over [00:48] 250 million times. To see that level of engagement [00:51] collectively says that people feel that we're living in [00:55] chaotic economic times and they're looking for some [00:58] perspective on how to change it. [ MUSIC ] The old [01:01] assumption has been the division is Democrats versus [01:03] Republicans. Yeah, some's way off all over the country. [01:06] Right, left, everybody. Some fall. When I started [01:08] making saving capitalism, the front runners for the [01:11] elections were Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. What [01:15] righteous great insight was that I thought was [01:17] interesting enough to pick up a camera for is that this [01:20] would be the last establishment year before [01:24] something anti- establishment would change the whole [01:27] political economic system. When economic and political [01:30] power get concentrated you can't. Stick with the status [01:34] quo. People get too angry, they're looking for some [01:36] kind of a change, and the change that they've chosen [01:39] for now is Donald Trump. If you remove Donald [01:41] Trump, you just get another Donald Trump. The [01:43] problem is you have to fix that system. And what we [01:45] see in the film, in saving capitalism, is that you have 40 [01:48] years of. A giant redistribution of money from the [01:52] middle- class to the wealthy and essentially that that [01:54] has political consequences as well as economic [01:57] consequences. So what we are trying to point out in the [01:59] movie is that even if you don't think you have anything [02:01] in common with somebody in the other side, if you are [02:04] broadly speaking frustrated with the system we have [02:07] to see that that economic system has stopped working [02:09] for everybody. Regardless of political persuasion or [02:13] else we won't have the sort of consensus about how to [02:16] fix that system. The old assumption has been the [02:20] division is Democrat versus Republican. Yeah, that's [02:23] [ CROSSTALK ] But what we're beginning to see is that [02:26] it's actually anti establishment versus establishment. [02:29] Yeah. It's people who don't want the big money and [02:33] the crony capitalism. Versus the crony capitalists. The [02:36] economic system is not like the weather. It didn't just [02:39] happen to you. You can fix it. You have to feel a sense [02:42] of agency over this. The only way to do that is to sort [02:45] of restore a kind of counter veiling power across our [02:49] economic and political system that requires work. If we [02:53] don't see our economic system is changeable, if we [02:56] don't see our political system as reform- able. Then [02:59] people stay on the silence they don't get engaged. The [03:01] only way out of this is to not be cynical about fixing it, [03:05] to think that we can do this, that we can actually [03:08] change this. And I feel like if you understand how it [03:11] happened and that people changed it for the worse [03:14] then you can understand how we can fix it.
