Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona announced Tuesday that he would not run for re-election and condemned the direction of his own Republican Party, saying he “will not be complicit or silent.”

In his speech announcing the news on the Senate floor, Flake delivered a pointed message regarding President Donald Trump and his administration, saying “it seems that our democracy is more defined by our discord and our dysfunction than it is by our values and our principles.”

Flake also addressed changes in the political climate, which he referred to as “the new normal.”

“We must never regard as normal the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country,” Flake said.
