Former First Lady [Michelle Obama](http://time.com/4762055/donald-trump-school-nutrition-guidelines/) revealed her daughters Sasha, 15, and 18-year-old Malia spent their last night at the [White House](http://time.com/4760741/hasan-minhaj-whcd-funniest-jokes/) in January with a slumber party, chicken nuggets and pizza with friends. “They had a sleepover because of course on Inauguration Day, because my girls are so normal, they’re like, ‘Well, eight girls are gonna be sleeping here because it’s our last time, and we want pizza and we want nuggets.’ And it’s like, really?” Obama said last week at the [American Institute of Architecture conference](http://www.architecturalrecord.com/articles/12694-aia-conference-michelle-obama-on-architecture-and-life-after-the-white-house) in Orlando, Fla., as reported by [_Today_](http://www.today.com/parents/michelle-obama-reveals-how-daughters-malia-sasha-spent-final-white-t110991). Their mother said leaving the place they called home for eight years was difficult. “So that moment of transition, right before the doors opened and we welcomed in the new family, our kids were leaving out the back door in tears, saying goodbye to people,” she said. But for the former First Lady, she kept the tears to a minimum. And they just surprise and enchant and impress more and more every single day as they grow up. And, These days, when we talk, we talk [ BLANK_AUDIO ] as parent to child, but also, we learn from them. And I think it was really interesting to see how Malia and Sasha reacted. They were disappointed. They paid attention to what their mom said during the campaign and believed it, because it's consistent with what we've tried to teach them in our household. And we've tried to teach them hope. And that The only thing that is the end of the world is the end of the world. So you get knocked down, you get up, brush yourself off and you get back to work. They do not They don't mope and what I am really proud of them-- what makes me the proudest about them is that They are also don't get scenical about it. They have not assumed because there's sudden win or because some of the values they care about don't seem as if they're vindicated that automatically America has somehow rejected them or rejected their values. I don't think they feel that way. I think they And in part through osmosis and part through dinnertime conversations, appreciated the fact that this is a big, complicated country. And democracy is messy and it doesn't always work exactly the way you might want. It doesn't guarantee certain outcomes.
