How Selena Gomez Takes Care of Her Mental Health

In a new Vogue profile, Selena Gomez shared that she sees a “shrink” five days a week and undergoes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). It’s an approach originally used for borderline personality disorder, but is now employed to treat other conditions. “DBT has completely changed my life,” she said.

For Gomez, touring can be very stressful, and she’s canceled two in order to check into rehab to cope with the strain and a lupus diagnosis. She shared with Vogue that during her Revival tour last summer, her “self-esteem was shot” and she suffered from depression, anxiety and panic attacks. “Tours are a really lonely place for me,” she said.

But therapy has helped, and Gomez wishes that more people were open about needing assistance. “We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart,” she said.

Right now, Gomez doesn’t have any new projects in the works, although the Netflix series she executive-produced, 13 Reasons Why, starts streaming March 31. “For a change,” she said, “it feels like I don’t have to be holding my breath and waiting for somebody to judge a piece of work that I’m doing.”
