We Ranked the Best Celebrity Halloween Costumes This Year

3 minute read

Halloween is once again upon us, bringing the perfect opportunity to dress up as your favorite pop culture character or gruesome ghoul — and it appears that celebs are no exception to joining in the fun.

Over the weekend, stars from all over pulled at all the stops when it came to their Halloween costumes, ranging from timely (Katy Perry’s Hillary Clinton ensemble) to truly terrifying (Martha Stewart’s deadly nurse comes to mind.)

To help you sift through the flood of costume posts on your Instagram feed, TIME’s selected the best celeb looks from the Halloween festivities so far and ranked them with a fitting superlative below.

Most self-referential: Bette Midler dressed up as her own character, Winifred Sanderson, from Hocus Pocus — and why not? Winifred was arguably the best character from what is definitively the best Halloween movie of all time.

Most timely: With the election less than two weeks away, Katy Perry let everyone know that she was “with her” this Halloween by showing support for the Democratic nominee.

Most committed to their look: Kylie Jenner perfectly recreated Christina Aguilera during her “Dirrty”-era, from her highlighted extensions, facial piercings, and of course, those chaps. Jenner even scored an appreciative post from Christina herself on the highly accurate costume.

Most transformative costume: Leave it to the ultimate domestic goddess and noted shade queen Martha Stewart to pull off two costumes that rendered her almost unrecognizable. Stewart turned up the glamour as a sexy Marilyn Monroe complete with a platinum blonde wig and shimmering dress, but it was her bloody nurse costume that really stole the show.

Most likely to inspire #RelationshipGoals: Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert have always rolled as a too-cool-for-school unit, but their epic Halloween costumes this year epitomized their ride-or-die philosophy dressed up as Harley Quinn and the Joker.

Best use of gratuitous sparkle: When it came to glitter, there was no one who shone brighter over Halloween weekend than Jenna Dewan Tatum whose magical unicorn costume consisted of everything silver, shimmering, and rainbow-colored.

Best group costume: Leave it to Beyoncé to rally three generations of flawless Knowles women to recreate the formidable trio of Salt-N-Pepa.

Best Halloween hair: Cindy Crawford and her incredibly photogenic progeny (Kaia and Presley) with hubby Rande Gerber upped the ante with their first family of rock costumes. All four of them committed to the theme, somehow making brightly-colored mullets and teased manes look chic.

Best frouple costume: Jessica Alba and bestie Kelly Sawyer went for win as Absolutely Fabulous’s Patsy and Edina, complete with the requisite big hair and hard liquor.
