• Dennis Byrd, 50, former NFL defensive lineman, in a car crash. The New York Jets player was known for recovering from a paralyzing neck injury in 1992.

• Jia Jia, 38, the world’s oldest giant panda to live in captivity.

WON

The 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, by Bob Dylan, for creating “new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” He is the first musician to win the award.
