Chinese state-media heralded the visit as a [diplomatic “milestone” of “historic significance,”](http://en.people.cn/n3/2016/1013/c90000-9126474.html "undefined") as the two countries will [sign at least 21 agreements amounting to nearly $40 billion investment](http://www.scmp.com/week-asia/geopolitics/article/2027789/what-bangladesh-hopes-gain-milestone-visit-chinas-xi-jinping "undefined") in Bangladesh. According to Reuters, China will also[ sign off on nearly $24 billion](http://www.reuters.com/article/us-bangladesh-china-idUSKCN12D34M?il=0 "undefined") worth of loans to the country — Bangladesh’s biggest foreign credit line to date. The deal comes after of a series of investments made by Chinese companies in Bangladesh in the past several months — including a $1.1 billion deal signed this week by [Chinese cable manufacturer](http://www.reuters.com/article/china-bangladesh-grid-idUSL4N1CJ451 "undefined") Jiangsu Etern Co. to strengthen the South Asian country’s power grid, and a $3.1 billion deal by [China Railway Group to build nearly 170 km of railroads](http://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/2001471/china-wins-us3-billion-bid-build-rail-line-bangladesh "undefined") connecting the capital Dhaka to southwestern cities. Bangladesh has traditionally been one of India’s strongest allies in the region, but experts say that Delhi will not be able to match Beijing’s largesse. However, [when asked by local media](http://bdnews24.com/bangladesh/2016/10/13/xi-jinpings-visit-wont-affect-ties-with-india-bangladesh "undefined"), Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali said he did not think the visit would significantly impact Bangladesh-India relations.
