If you’re prone to hitting the snooze button one too many times in the morning, one of the last things on your mind when you roll out of bed is eating something wholesome. That’s where breakfast hacks can come in handy. Between brushing your teeth and making sure your socks match, getting ready can be a mad dash even without worrying about food. But skipping breakfast, or your morning coffee, can be a surefire way to make yourself grumpy. The goal is to eat something delicious without expending too much effort, because you’re probably half-asleep anyway.
Though some advance preparation is required for a couple of these hacks to work, all of them can make your mornings much smoother and even kind of enjoyable. You don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to enjoy classic brunch dishes, like cinnamon rolls or a breakfast burrito, before work. With these tips to speed up your morning routine, you could even have freshly made French toast and coffee in the same amount of time it would take you to shovel in a bowl of cereal. Following these nine breakfast hacks is a no-brainer if you love breakfast and sleeping in.
1. Get a Coffee Maker with a Timer
One of the best smells to wake up to in the morning is fresh coffee, and if you have a coffee maker with a timer, you can be stirred awake by that sweet smell of caffeine every morning without having to get out of bed. Fill up the water tank and grind the beans the night before, set the timer on the machine to start brewing coffee right before you wake up, and you can grab a hot cup as you run out the door.
2. Keep Pancake Batter in a Squeeze Bottle
Make pancake batter ahead of time, and store it in a squeeze bottle. That way, if you want fresh, hot pancakes in the morning, all you’ll have to do is heat up a pan or a griddle and squeeze some batter into the middle. Using a squeeze bottle to also means you’ll be able to make fun designs, if you can spare those few extra minutes to play with your food.
3. Bake Cinnamon Rolls in a Waffle Iron
Pre-made cinnamon rolls from the grocery store are certainly an option for a relatively quick and hot breakfast, but if you’re looking something slightly more portable, try putting cinnamon rolls in your waffle iron. They’ll be less messy and much easier to eat with one hand, but still packed with all that cinnamon sugar you love. Plus, using a waffle iron to cook your cinnamon roll cuts cooking time from about 15 minutes in the oven to only three or four, depending on what iron you’re using.

4. Make French Toast in a Mug
This microwaved French toast recipe takes less than five minutes, and since it’s all prepped and cooked in a single mug, you can definitely take it with you if you’re in a rush. Throw buttered bread, milk, an egg, and some syrup into a mug and microwave for two minutes for fully cooked French toast without the hassle.
5. Microwave Scrambled Eggs
If sweet breakfasts aren’t your jam, don’t worry. You can also make scrambled eggs in the microwave in under three minutes. Whisk together two eggs and two tablespoons of milk in a mug, then throw it in the microwave for 45 seconds. Take it out and stir, then pop it back in for another 30 seconds, and you’ll end up with fluffy eggs. Just make sure to spray the inside of the mug with some oil first so the eggs don’t stick.
6. Freeze Pre-Made Breakfast Burritos
Making your own breakfast burritos gives you total control over what ingredients are in there, from eggs and beans to spinach and peppers, and how cheesy they are. You can prepare a large batch of them in advance and freeze them so they stay fresh. That means all you’ll have to do to enjoy your favorite breakfast burrito in the morning is toss it in the microwave for two minutes, which is probably quicker than you can get a regular burrito to go.
7. Use a Muffin Tin
Muffin tins aren’t just for muffins anymore. You can make omelet muffins, granola cups, and even hash browns in a standard muffin tin. Each cup is a single serving, and preparing food in these bite-size portions makes even the most unwieldy foods easy to eat when you’re in a rush.
8. Prep Smoothie Popsicles

There’s also no risk of spilling your smoothie in the car with this popsicle, which is a definite bonus.
