Conservative Arizona Newspaper Endorses Hillary Clinton: ‘This Year Is Different’

A conservative Arizona newspaper on Tuesday endorsed Hillary Clinton for president—the first time in more than a century that it has announced support for a Democratic candidate over a Republican.

The Arizona Republic’s editorial board issued a lengthy explanation for why it believes Clinton is a better choice than Trump and for why it broke from its 126-year straight history of backing a Republican.

“Since The Arizona Republic began publication in 1890, we have never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president. Never. This reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles,” it said. “This year is different.”

“The 2016 Republican candidate is not conservative and he is not qualified,” the editorial board continued. “That’s why, for the first time in our history, The Arizona Republic will support a Democrat for president.”

The newspaper went on to detail the key differences in policies and behaviors between the two presidential hopefuls. Earlier this month, polls showed Clinton and Trump were neck-and-neck among voters in Arizona, which is not currently a battleground state.
