Here’s Your Official Song of Summer 2016, According to Spotify

1 minute read

With summer officially over, it’s time for a (musical) reckoning: which earworm dominated the soundwaves this season? According to streaming service Spotify, Drake’s low-key “One Dance” takes the crown for 2016’s song of the summer. The ranking is based on global streaming volume of individual tracks.

The slow burner, a Drizzy collaboration with Wiz Kid and Kyla, has been omnipresent since it dropped in April. More importantly, it racked up a whopping 757 million streams on the service, 100 million more than its nearest competitor. That honor goes to the Rihanna and Calvin Harris track “This Is What You Came For,” followed by Sia’s “Cheap Thrills.” In other words, hip-hop’s newest golden couple is sitting very pretty on their musical thrones right now.

Last year, Major Lazer’s “Lean On” snagged the same title, with OMI’s peppy “Cheerleader” and Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” as runners-up.

And if you prefer your summer jam sung to you in the dulcet tones of President Obama, there’s a dub of that, too. Drake lyrics: they’re officially the universal language.
