The Olympics are a perfect opportunity for fans to admire the physiques and accomplishments of athletes who can do what we mere mortals can hardly fathom. Yet as with anything in the digital age, the trolls still like to come out and find something to criticize.
Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno may not have expected much attention in the qualifying rounds on Sunday—her country isn’t known for strong performance in the sport—and she placed 31st, failing to qualify for the finals. But she still got her 15 minutes of fame on Twitter, where some came out to criticize her athletic build.
But good citizens of the Internet quickly took to social media to defend the athlete with admiration and encouragement, with messages like “#AlexaMoreno is a GREAT woman!”
Sorry, trolls: Moreno is a star on and off the balance beam.
