A North Carolina family had a joyous reunion with their dog after she was swept away in rough river rapids in Ontario.
David Kareken and his family were on a camping trip in the Boundary Waters area of Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park in early July when Kali, their 7-year-old golden retriever/border collie mix, fell into the violent rapids of a waterway called Rebecca Falls and disappeared. Kareken and his family searched for hours, and left the park sure that Kali had drowned.
“We were…just beside ourselves,” Kareken told the CBC. “You know, it was a nightmare.”
Almost two weeks later, Kareken was back home in Asheville, North Carolina, when he received a phone call from the park saying that a dog matching Kali’s description had been found alive and well, the CBC reported. He then drove up to Ontario to collect his pet who had survived alone in the wilderness for 10 days.
A video of the reunion shows an ecstatic Kali jumping all over Kareken.
“Reuniting was extraordinary,” Kareken told the CBC.
