The American director Garry Marshall died Tuesday at the age of 81. His career spanned more than half a century and he was responsible for creating or directing countless American cultural touchstones, including Happy Days and its spinoffs Mork & Mindy and Laverne & Shirley; The Odd Couple; and the films Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries. After news of his death broke, dozens of celebrities aired their tributes on social media.
Henry Winkler, who played Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on Happy Days, was among many who left a note of gratitude.
