Ronda Rousey Says She’s ‘Fine Not Being Perfect’

2 minute read

Last November Ronda Rousey suffered a shocking loss to Holly Holm at the UFC 193 fight, but the fighter is ready to get back into the ring.

Rousey recently starred in a Reebok commercial slamming the notion of perfection. In the commercial, Rousey is seen ripping off fake eyelashes and hair extensions while walking through a set in a low-cut dress. She says on a voiceover: “Here’s the thing about being perfect: Perfect never gets truly tested. Perfect never gets to silence its critics.”

Rousey’s attire makes a quick change and as she wipes off her lipstick and puts on her boxing gear, she says, “Perfect never gets a shot at redemption.” Right as she hits punching bags, Rousey stares into the camera and asserts, “So, yeah, I’m fine not being perfect.”

Rousey has been on a boxing hiatus since her loss to Holm, but she’s appeared in various commercials and even hosted Saturday Night Live in January. TIME named her one of the 100 Most Influential People, and Tina Fey wrote about her: “Imagine if we could teach our daughters to value their bodies for what they can do, not for how others think they look. Could Ronda be the one to finally help us understand that as females, we define the word feminine and that it doesn’t define us?”

During an emotional interview with Ellen DeGeneres in February, Rousey opened up about suicidal thoughts following her defeat. She told DeGeneres, “I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself and that exact second I’m like, ‘I’m nothing, what do I do anymore, and no one gives a s–t about me anymore without this.’”
