Stack said [in a statement](http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/news/news/2016/2016-06-14-gun-violence-lobby-congress.page "undefined"). “An epidemiological analysis of gun violence is vital so physicians and other health providers, law enforcement, and society at large may be able to prevent injury, death and other harms to society resulting from firearms.” The medical group made its announcement amid one of the [most tragic mass shootings in America](http://time.com/4365260/orlando-shooting-pulse-nightclub-what-know/?xid=newsletter-brief "undefined"). In the early morning of June 12, a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, leaving 49 and wounding dozens more.
