But this season, it also means adventures in the New Zealand bush, farting corpse humor, new takes on old chariot races and [Meryl Streep](http://time.com/4066127/meryl-streep-sexism-hollywood/ "undefined") singing very, very badly (on purpose). From the return of Jason Bourne and [President Bill Pullman](http://time.com/4147092/independence-day-resurgence-trailer/ "undefined") to gender-flipped Ghostbusters and Wall Street execs, here are the movies people will be buzzing about all summer long. ### _X-Men: Apocalypse_ (May 27) The summer superhero season kicks off (well, continues, if you’re counting [Captain America’s](http://time.com/4314812/captain-america-civil-war-movie-review/ "undefined") early-May entry) with the ninth installment of Marvel’s mutant-appreciation franchise, introducing [Oscar Isaac](http://time.com/3687287/oscar-isaacs-big-break/ "undefined") as the big, bad Original Mutant with designs on annihilating civilization. [Jennifer Lawrence](http://time.com/4167451/jennifer-lawrence-amy-schumer-movie-adele-emma-stone/ "undefined") and [Michael Fassbender](http://time.com/4238628/michael-fassbender-steve-jobs-oscars-interview/ "undefined") return, and newcomer [Sophie Turner](http://time.com/4342715/sophie-turner-game-of-thrones-x-men/ "undefined") leads a squad of up-and-coming mutants still wrestling with their powers. ### _Alice Through the Looking Glass_ (May 27) [Mia Wasikowska](http://time.com/3432923/tracks-movie-mia-wasikowska/ "undefined") returns as Lewis Carroll’s curious heroine in this Tim Burton-produced sequel to Disney’s 2010 live-action _Alice in Wonderland_. [Johnny Depp](http://time.com/4343939/johnny-depp-donald-trump-impersonation-ellen-degeneres-show/ "undefined") reprises his role as the Mad Hatter, now madder than ever, and Sacha Baron Cohen joins the cast to play Time (the concept and the character). ### _Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (June 3)_ From [The Lonely Island](http://time.com/4338454/the-lonely-island-jimmy-fallon-im-on-a-boat-remix/ "undefined"), the comedy brains behind “Lazy Sunday,” “Mother Lover” and _Hot Rod_, comes this mockumentary about a pop star named Conner 4 Real, played by Island member and _Saturday Night Live_ alum [Andy Samberg](http://time.com/4041965/emmys-2015-andy-samberg-diversity-sexism/ "undefined"). Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Imogen Poots round out the cast. ### _Me Before You_ (June 3) _Game of Thrones_ star [Emilia Clarke](http://time.com/4305340/emilia-clarke-game-of-thrones-swear-word/ "undefined") anchors this romantic drama, adapted by JoJo Moyes from her novel of the same name about a woman who becomes a caregiver for a cynical, paralyzed young man (Sam Claflin, of _Hunger Games_ fame). It may be this summer’s most likely movie to make you kick yourself for leaving your tissues at home. ### _Finding Dory_ (June 17) It’s been 13 years since we went looking for Nemo, and now it’s time for his amnesiac best friend Dory (voiced by [Ellen DeGeneres](http://time.com/4286050/ellen-degeneres-mississippi-law-lgbt/ "undefined")) to embark on a search of her own (specifically, for her family). Pixar’s only movie out in 2016, _Finding Dory_ also features the vocal cords of Diane Keaton, Albert Brooks and Eugene Levy. ### _Central Intelligence_ (June 17) [Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson](http://time.com/4314635/dwayne-johnson-the-rock-alarm-clock-app/ "undefined") and [Kevin Hart](http://time.com/4240708/kevin-hart-hollywood-diversity/ "undefined") play a formerly nerdy CIA agent and a formerly cool accountant, respectively, in this action comedy, which may have been cast thusly just so it could wield the summer’s punniest tagline: “Saving the world takes a little Hart and a big Johnson.” ### _Tickled_ (June 17) This documentary about the bizarre world of competitive tickling—yes, it’s a thing—starts off as a lighthearted profile of an underground subculture but gradually morphs into a disturbing thriller about a world of intrigue, secrets and crime. ### _The Neon Demon_ (June 24) Nicholas Winding Refn’s [horror-thriller](http://time.com/4343214/nicolas-winding-refn-neon-demon/ "undefined") about an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) terrorized by beauty-obsessed women looks as visually stunning as his divisive 2013 thriller _Only God Forgives_ (which was booed at Cannes) and as compelling as 2011’s _Drive_ (which received a standing ovation at the same festival). ### _Independence Day: Resurgence_ (June 24) Despite grumbles that everything at the movies these days is either a sequel or a reboot, many fans are more than a little excited for this [follow-up](http://time.com/3932619/independence-day-resurgence-photo/ "undefined") to the 1996 sci-fi disaster blockbuster _Independence Day_, which reunites Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman with director Roland Emmerich and finds a new lead (Will Smith’s absence gets its own [explanation](http://time.com/4147104/independence-day-will-smith/ "undefined") in the new film) in Liam Hemsworth. ### _Swiss Army Man_ (June 24) If you can get past the idea of a farting corpse (which half the audience at the movie’s [Sundance](http://time.com/4200767/sundance-2016-biggest-movies/ "undefined") premiere could not), this story of a man ([Paul Dano](http://time.com/3399638/paul-dano-brian-wilson/ "undefined")) stranded on a deserted island and the corpse he befriends ([Daniel Radcliffe](http://time.com/4080429/daniel-radcliffe-playboy-interview/ "undefined")) is a surprisingly beautiful blend of erection jokes, whimsical visuals and deep philosophical reflection. ### _Free State of Jones_ (June 24) [Matthew McConaughey](http://time.com/3881954/matthew-mcconaughey-graduation-speech-university-of-houston/ "undefined") stars opposite Gugu Mbatha-Raw in this historical [action-drama](http://time.com/3827295/matthew-mcconaughey-free-state-of-jones/ "undefined"), based on the true story of Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer who led a southern rebellion against the Confederates during the Civil War. ### _Hunt for the Wilderpeople_ (June 24) From writer-director Taika Waititi, whose 2010 film _Boy_ is the top-grossing Kiwi movie ever (and whose upcoming big-ticket gig is next year’s [_Thor: Ragnarok_](http://time.com/3857111/female-thor-identity/ "undefined")), comes this [tale](http://time.com/4306852/tribeca-film-festival-2016/ "undefined") of a tough foster kid teaming up with a 60-something grouch to survive in the bush. ### _The BFG_ (July 1) Steven Spielberg’s [adaptation](http://time.com/4336467/review-bfg-steven-spielberg-cannes/ "undefined") of Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s novel has a lot going for it, from a script by _E.T._’s scribe (Melissa Mathison, who died last year after completing the screenplay), newly minted Oscar winner Mark Rylance as the titular [Big Friendly Giant](http://time.com/4343386/roald-dahl-bfg-book-movie/ "undefined") and, of course, source material that’s replete with charming linguistic inventions and a great deal of heart. ### _The Legend of Tarzan_ (July 1) Based on the jungle dweller created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, this adventure film features [Alexander Skarsgård](http://time.com/4276753/legend-of-tarzan-margot-robbie-alexander-skarsgard/ "undefined") as the once feral, now civilized Tarzan. Known as John Clayton since his relocation to London’s high society, the king of the jungle must return to his home thanks to a scheme much larger than himself. Margot Robbie plays Jane and Christoph Waltz, doing what he does best, plays the bad guy. ### _The Secret Life of Pets_ (July 8) This animated family movie explores the age-old question—which [home surveillance technology](http://time.com/3933589/canary-nest-home-security/ "undefined") will soon likely render obsolete—of what kind of shenanigans cats and dogs get up to when their humans aren’t around. Its all-star voice cast includes [Louis C.K.](http://time.com/4320972/louis-ck-conan-quit-the-internet/ "undefined"), Eric Stonestreet, Jenny Slate and Ellie Kemper. ### _Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates_ (July 8) In a reversal of the _Wedding Crashers_ formula, Adam Devine and [Zac Efron](http://time.com/93159/neighbors-movie-zac-efron-interview/ "undefined") star as brothers not looking to pick up ladies at their sister’s wedding, but forced to seek dates who will ostensibly keep them from destroying the event with their impish antics. Enter [Aubrey Plaza](http://time.com/3766949/aubrey-plaza-interview/ "undefined") and [Anna Kendrick](http://time.com/3851118/anna-kendrick-book-essays/ "undefined"), who feign nice girls for the free ticket to Hawaii before letting loose even wilder antics of their own. ### _Captain Fantastic_ (July 8) If the doldrums of mid-summer have you pining for quirkier indie fare, _Captain Fantastic_ offers up Viggo Mortensen as a different kind of superhero: a single dad raising his kids far, far off the grid. Writer-director Matt Ross won a directing award for the film at Cannes, where its gaggle of child actors also inspired praise. ### _The Infiltrator_ (July 13) [Bryan Cranston](http://time.com/4324755/bryan-cranston-walter-white/ "undefined") transitions from [druglord](http://time.com/2924105/breaking-bad-is-the-most-binge-watched-tv-show-ever-study-finds/ "undefined") to narc in this crime drama based on the true story of a federal agent, Robert Mazur, who went undercover in a major sting operation to bust Pablo Escobar’s Medellín drug cartel beginning in 1986. ### _Ghostbusters_ (July 15) Three decades after they first unleashed their skills on a ghost-infested New York City, the [Ghostbusters](http://time.com/4313469/original-ghostbusters-theaters/ "undefined") return with an all-female cast ([Kristen Wiig](http://time.com/3842663/kristen-wiig-welcome-to-me/ "undefined")! [Leslie Jones](http://time.com/88130/snls-leslie-jones-uses-slavery-to-make-a-point-about-being-black-and-beautiful/ "undefined")! [Melissa McCarthy](http://time.com/4308825/melissa-mccarthy-belives-in-ghosts-ghostbusters-time-100/ "undefined")! [Kate McKinnon](http://time.com/4152597/kate-mckinnon-ghostbusters-poster/ "undefined")!)—a flipping of the script which has drawn both cheers and, disappointingly, [jeers](http://time.com/4086937/kristen-wiig-female-ghostbusters-backlash/ "undefined"). _Bridemaids_ director Paul Feig helms what is likely to be one of the most discussed blockbusters of the year. ### _Equals_ (July 15) Cannes MVP [Kristen Stewart](http://time.com/4339097/kristen-stewart-personal-shopper/ "undefined") stars opposite Nicholas Hoult in this [dystopian sci-fi flick](http://time.com/4306852/tribeca-film-festival-2016/ "undefined") about a future in which human emotion is not only verboten but actually prevented by genetic programming. Stewart and Hoult experience love for the first time against director Drake Doremus’ gorgeous, if hauntingly sterile, vision of the future. ### _Star Trek Beyond_ (July 22) The third installment in the latest reboot of the _Star Trek_ franchise, [_Beyond_](http://time.com/4010798/star-trek-beyond-nimoy/ "undefined") finds Justin Lin taking the reins from [J.J. Abrams](http://time.com/4319331/j-j-abrams-lin-manuel-miranda-duet-star-wars-day/ "undefined"), who was too tied up with another [intergalactic franchise](http://time.com/4134371/how-j-j-abrams-brought-back-star-wars/ "undefined") to direct this one. New additions Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella join returning cast members Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana. ### _Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie_ (July 22) Two decades after Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley first appeared as the bumbling Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone on the BBC cult comedy _Absolutely Fabulous_, they’re taking their glamor-seeking characters to the big screen. In the movie, they are forced flee to the French Riviera after their quest to book Kate Moss as a new client ends with an unfortunate accident. ### _Jason Bourne_ (July 29) [Matt Damon](http://time.com/3574651/matt-damon-bourne-movie/ "undefined") swore that the only way he’d play [Jason Bourne](http://time.com/4323253/matt-damon-jason-bourne-featurette/ "undefined") again would be if director Paul Greengrass returned alongside him. Greengrass did just that, and the result is the fifth installment in the franchise, the fourth starring Damon, and, per the trailer, an astonishing number of totaled vehicles. ### _Equity_ (July 29) _Breaking Bad_’s Anna Gunn gets a leading role in this financial thriller, which premiered at [Sundance](http://time.com/4200767/sundance-2016-biggest-movies/ "undefined") positioning itself as the first female-driven Wall Street flick. Its plot revolves around the familiar subject of the sketchy dealings of the [financial world](http://time.com/4295665/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-new-york-primary-wall-street/ "undefined"), but its themes of [workplace inequality](http://time.com/4286884/women-cant-wait-for-equal-pay/ "undefined") are nothing if not timely. ### _Bad Moms_ (July 29) [Mila Kunis](http://time.com/2865808/mila-kunis-ashton-kutcher-delivery-room-pregnancy/ "undefined"), [Kristen Bell](http://motto.time.com/4320848/kristen-bell-mental-health-depression-anxiety/ "undefined") and [Kathryn Hahn](http://time.com/3838003/kathryn-hahn-happyish-philip-seymour-hoffman/ "undefined") ditch the unbearable expectations of perfect motherhood in this summer comedy penned by the writers of _The Hangover_. They’re your PTA’s worst nightmare, whip-its and all. ### _Suicide Squad_ (Aug. 5) DC Comics is unleashing its baddest villains in this ensemble [antihero movie](http://time.com/4288039/suicide-squad-footage-mtv-movie-awards/ "undefined"), from the Joker ([Jared Leto](http://time.com/4324670/suicide-squad-jared-leto-laugh/ "undefined")) to the bonkers Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). Robbie in particular is one to watch, as recent [rumors](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/margot-robbies-harley-quinn-movie-894486 "undefined") suggest she may be starring in (and producing) her own spin-off about DC’s female superheroes and supervillains. ### _Pete’s Dragon_ (Aug. 12) Disney aims to continue its streak of [live-action fairy-tale](http://time.com/4308042/disney-pipeline-live-action-fairy-tales/ "undefined") success (see: [_Jungle Book_](http://time.com/4293583/review-jungle-book-jon-favreau/ "undefined"), [_Maleficent_](http://time.com/136170/maleficent-movie-review-angelina-jolie/ "undefined"), [_Cinderella_](http://time.com/3743894/cinderella-review-disney-live-action/ "undefined"), _Alice in Wonderland_) with this live-action adaptation of its 1977 animated musical about a friendship between an orphan and an invisible dragon. Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard star. ### _Florence Foster Jenkins_ (Aug. 12) [Meryl Streep](http://time.com/3712802/oscars-2015-meryl-streep-next-movies/ "undefined") is a superhuman who seems to do everything well. Here, she sings very, very badly, very, very well. The comedy, which costars [Hugh Grant](http://time.com/3704181/hugh-grant-romantic-comedies/ "undefined"), tells the true story of a wealthy socialite who became an opera phenomenon for her utter and complete lack of rhythm and tone. Though his subject’s voice is hilariously atrocious, director Stephen Frears maintains a sense of compassion through the laughter. ### _Ben-Hur_ (Aug. 19) This story of brotherly love, rivalry and redemption is not a [remake](http://time.com/3390067/ben-hur-remake-jack-huston-charlton-heston-boardwalk-empire-timur-bekmambetov-morgan-freeman/ "undefined") of the 1959 Charlton Heston starrer —it’s based on that movie’s source material, Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel _Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ_—but it promises a heart-pounding modern update to the epic chariot race that made that movie so legendary. ### _Southside With You_ (Aug. 26) As the Obamas look toward their last months in the White House, this [indie romance](http://time.com/3620689/obama-first-date-southside-with-you/ "undefined") looks at the first day they spent together—a hot summer day in 1989 which began as a strictly platonic outing between colleagues (per Tika Sumpter’s Michelle) and ended with ice cream and a kiss (per Parker Sawyer’s Barack). ### _War Dogs_ (Aug. 19) In 2007, a couple of stoners from Miami secured a $300 million ammunition contract with the Department of Defense. Here, _The Hangover_ director Todd Phillips brings the [stranger-than-fiction tale](http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-stoner-arms-dealers-20110316 "undefined") to life. [Jonah Hill](http://time.com/3617571/jonah-hill-todd-phillips-arms-and-the-dudes/ "undefined") is at the top of his game as a deliciously conniving scoundrel.
