Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on May 2 offering a free hectare (2.5 acres) of land to any citizen who moves to the country’s sparsely populated far east, including the northern Arctic, deep Siberia and the coast near Japan. He’s in good company:
1. MARQUETTE, KANS.
The small prairie town is one of a handful in the state that distribute lots to potential new residents for community and economic improvement. In Marquette, U.S. citizens can apply for free land if they agree to build housing on their new plots.
2. PITCAIRN ISLANDS
These four British islands in the South Pacific are among the most isolated in the world and have fewer than 50 residents. The local government gives land to settlers of all nations, who can apply for residential, garden, forest or orchard plots.
3. YUKON, CANADA
The Yukon Territory’s Agricultural Lands Program offers tracts for those brave enough to cultivate Arctic land. Canadians or permanent residents 19 or older can submit plans for approval.
4. LOUP CITY, NEB.
With a population of around 1,000, the city gives away land if applicants agree to build over 1,100 sq. ft. of housing. Applicants under a certain income level can apply for “Workforce Home” lots and can receive up to $20,000 toward a construction down payment.
