Cleveland Agrees to Pay Family of Tamir Rice $6 Million

The family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy fatally shot by Cleveland police in 2014, will receive a $6 million payment from the city as the result of a settlement agreement.

The settlement ends a lawsuit that was filed just a couple weeks after Rice’s death, Cleveland.com reports. Officers were called to a park in November of 2014 because someone had reported seeing a person with a gun at the scene. At the time, Rice was playing with a toy pellet gun. A grand jury later declined to indict police officers in the shooting.

Rice’s death was one of several in recent years that sparked protests and calls for police reforms.
